Hunters, Do you know "hunters" that kill for sport?
I get so tired of these anti's talking about "hunters" killing for sport.
I do not know one person I would call a "hunter" that hunts just for sport. Don't get me wrong I love to hunt, but I eat what I kill.
My family and I live on what I kill hunting.
I am talking big game, not gophers.
2 yrs ago I killed a Mountain Lion, I ate it

I own a ranch. I have had a few "head hunters" show up and want to hunt my ranch. I'm not one of those types to post my ground against hunting.
These two idiots hunted my west pasture one year and drove back happy. they had a MULE head in the back of their pick up. They were proud of the Mule deer they had downed and just had to show me. Boy was that funny. I got paid well too for my mule.
Head hunters are not hunters. Sportsmen should fish. HUNTERS are welcome on my ranch

Every hunter hunts because its fun. I also don't mind those people who hunt for "trophys" if they follow the law and use the meat from the animal they kill or at least give it to someone who will. I despise those people who kill an animal, cut off the head and then leave the rest lying on the ground. My family and I also live off of what I hunt...I have a freezer full of deer, game birds, and even small game like rabbits. I also have quit a bit of fish from last summer. I enjoy hunting because you get to see things that most people don't....how many people have seen a deer in the wild 5 feet away...or had a squirrel run up the tree 12 inches from your head while sitting in a tree stand....I love nature....I do get the heart pounding rush when you see an animal that you can shoot and fill tags with.....I don't think its the killing, it the fact that you have worked hard to fill that tag and heres you chance....not all hunting is just driving around and getting out of the truck walking 10 ft...most hunting is work. I get a bigger thrill from know that steak on the grill is something that I did from start to finish...killed, cleaned, prepared cooked.....start to finish...

I don't personally know any "hunters" that go out and kill things just for sport. It may happen, but I don't think that it's common practice.
I think that a lot of the misconceptions about this comes from any of the hunting shows on television. They usually show a couple guys going out and tracking a trophy animal and shooting it, but they never show them field dressing, skinning, and butchering it. I suppose that a non hunter could get the idea that shooting an animal and having the head mounted is all there is to hunting. I think most of the anti's haven't ever had a conversation with a real hunter, and most of them are perfectly happy with their own ignorance on the subject.

I simply want to address the comment about Troy Gentry. He is a sick individual. The practice of shooting animals in enclosed spaces is not a standard or acceptable practice for an ethical hunter. Anti-hunters simply like to take the rare person who does something like this and use it to generalize all hunters. I have been hunting since I was 10, and have had to defend myself against this sort of thing since I started. Hunting is a long-standing tradition in this country, and hunters play a tremendous role in conservation of wildlife and wilderness, as well as the overall heath of the populations of animals they hunt. I hate the fact that a handful of incidents like the Troy Gentry slaughter of a caged bear tarnishes the entire hunting community. Not all hunters are like that. People would get fired from their jobs or otherwise ostracized for generalizing a community the way that anti-hunters generalize us. Bottom line: real hunters and outdoorsmen are sickened by Gentry's actions.

I hunt for sport, in fact that's pretty much the only reason that I do. Whenever I go fishing, it's always catch and release, so when I go hunting, I just make sure that I know somebody else who wants the meat. I don't think there is anything wrong with not eating what you kill, just with not respecting it.

Killing for fun is unethical. I am an avid hunter and have bagged two deer this year. I wouldn't dream of shooting an animal like a whitetail just for fun. The more I learn about this animal the more I respect them. I would be tempted to shoot somebody who was mowing them down for fun. I know I would turn them into the DEC here in NY in a heartbeat. Personally, I think those who kill for the thrill of just killing need to get a psych evaluation. They have issues. This is how most serial killers get started.

Not many, however a few years ago while hunting here in East coast Canada ,I came across some young men(on the beer) ready to shoot the tail off a fox we were and others were feeding. When I ****** my gun and gave them some marching orders they weren't so brave. They prefer ed not to have their tails shot off so after many cuss words and calling me what they thought I was, put their guns away and gladly left the area. That fox and others there were still alive with their tails intact weeks later.

I am somebody who hunts or kills for sport. When the deer approaches and I slowly raise my rifle I can feel my pulse beating in my ears. I watch the deer while I am raising my rifle is he looking at me? stop! o.k. he is no longer looking. Shoulder my rifle. Wait! he is walking towards my truck let him get closer. I put the hairs on him right behind the shoulder high or low depending on distance. My heart stops beating I stop breathing time stops. I know the gun went off but I can't tell you how I know. Cycle the action cross-hairs on the deer. Wait to see if he drops. He drops. One shot. My heart starts beating I start breathing and time starts coming back. I get a bigger rush from squirrels. Yeah, I use the meat and I enjoy squirrel more than any domestic animal. But that moment when time stops is my real motivation.
I kill cleanly or I don't pull the trigger. I don't poach, bait or use scents I only scout. I have taken to using pistols as opposed to rifles. I feel no guilt for getting more out of my food than most. People who sterilize situations (i.e. buying meat in plastic) are missing the richness and reality of life.
