He should just ask her straight-out "what is going on?" They may have an open relationship, or this may be a fantasy they are acting out where she seduces his friend then comes home to him. If they had a threesome years ago than they are probably comfortable with him and they could easily have chosen him as the one to fulfill this fantasy. If this is the case the best route would be for them to let him in on it, anyway.

If this isn't the case then he should leave well enough alone. Doing your buddy's wife without him okaying it is not cool.

I would suggest being loyal to his friend and stay away from the wife. Being invited for a 3-way is different. The friend was included, this would be sneaking behind his back. Don't do it!
