Who pioneered the action movie staple of a person firing two handguns (one in each hand)?

I know that John Woo popularized this firing style (see: The Killer and Hard Boiled), but is he the first one to use it regularly?

And, no, I'm not looking for the very first movie to use this device. I'm talking about a director's "calling card", if you will.

I'd go with John Woo... A Better Tomorrow and the films you mentioned really set that up as one of his many signature film elements

I agree with the above, John Woo with The Killer was the first time I saw it, then appropiated by Tarantino, and Tony Scott in True Romance.

John Woo / Chow Yun Fat is my answer ... I'm not aware of HK / Macau cinema using it before like Woo has.

It was probably Sam Peckenpah. He pioneered the gunshot and subsequent wound with bloody results.
