I would shred them or burn them, especially with all the illegal ID stealing that been reported.

I clean out my file box twice a year. I usually keep bills for about 6 months. I just finished shredding everything from January to June and refiled the rest.
Keep it for a while, but I think that after 5 years unless it is something with a warranty it can go.
You might want to keep important stuff like test scores (SAT, ACT, PRAXIS, GRE, etc...)and tax returns.

Pack in boxes and give it away to charities and drop boxes. If it is not soiled or ripped, they will appreciate it.
For papers, get a shredder and keep the tax records for last 7 years and bills for a couple years. Shred the rest

If you still have an open account with retailers or companies, find the final statement for the year,, and save that. I'd SHRED the rest. Sometimes, personal info. is on a statement that you might not want to share. Good luck:)

Yes. Keep all receipts and bills for heat, electric, etc. You may need them at a future date in case of an emergency. You may need help from social services,(you never know), and they demand these papers. Good luck! :) arum

Please don't just throw them away...SHRED,SHRED, SHRED!!!!!Don't take any chances. If it is a house, car, or hospital document I would keep them. If it is just a light bill something like that, if you were going to need something like that you would have already needed it. You can always use old bank statements if you need too.

As someone else said - I would shred them - rip them apart, etc. so your info is not on them. As for getting rid of clothing, furniture, etc. please go to www.freecycle.org as this is a nationwide web site with areas local to you that is a group for giving away/receiving good - reuseable items from the landfill. I own my local group and it's great.
