What human food can I put in a raw diet for a puppy/dog? Any experience? Is the raw diet better?
I'm getting a puppy in (hopefully) a month or two. I've thought about feeding normal dog food but it seems that a raw diet is much healthier for dogs.
What ingredients should I use?
How much of it?
How many times per day?
I'd probably be getting a female Labrador so I'd need something that a Labrador would feel full eating.
I'd prefer ingredients that I could buy at the supermarket or butcher, not online or somehwere I need to go hours away to find. I live in Australia so please do not suggest Wal-Mart or PetSmart etc.
Thanks.

It's a great way of feeding from what I hear. I'm planning on getting a female Labrador myself! Yellow. Check out these sites about the BARF diet which is raw feeding.

There's tons of info on the net about raw feeding. It takes a little looking but you can find it. Check out Amazon for books on it. I think I may feed raw at least part of the time as it's definitely better. It's just a bit of a pain (my folks fed raw for a while). Showing dogs, I want mine to look as good as possible.
Edit: ROFLOL A taste for blood. Trust me, that's the last of your worries!

I've been feeding raw for about 2 years now, I highly recommend it. The key is variety. The staple of my dogs diet is chicken, its cheap and easy to find. They also get beef liver, chicken liver, chicken hearts and gizzards a few times a week. As well a few raw eggs shell and all a couple times a week as well. The shells are loaded with calcium.
They also get fish, beef cheeck meat, nearly any meat that is on sale I'll buy. I get all my dogs food at the grocery store or butcher. Freebies are also great, I have friends that hunt and I often get freebies from them.
There is a meat to bone, organ ratio, but for the life of me I can't remember what it is at the moment.
A puppy would need about 10% of its body weight daily, split into 3 meals a day. Or 2-3% of its expected adult body weight. I'm a member of a group on livejournal called rawdogs, they are a great source of information. There are ALOT of very experienced raw feeders over there, so I would definately check them out. Here is there link http://community.livejournal.com/rawdogs/profile

And a raw diet will NOT make your dog bloodthirsty either.

hey it sounds like you are talking about feeding you're loved one on the BARF diet. Which is were we keep to the things the pet would eat in the wild. I have used it in the past but now kinda of mix it in with the dog food diet I now feed. Some vets say that by feeding the pets off a raw diet or the BARF diet will cause it to have worms. We use a lot of chicken and beef in our feed but rice is another big ingredient. I have never been to AUSTRALIA so don't know what to tell you to look into but pretty much remember that if you need it to be cooked so does you're pet. They need lots of calcium, iron , and protein. If you have access to Internet on a regular basis you might check and see if you have a small pet natural food store in you're area. If so they will have a lot of organic remedies for you're pet and food that is much healthier for you're pet.Hope this helps.

It's not. People just like to think that it is because they are "new age" and the old hippies come back to haunt us all. Come on, are your dogs wolves? Do they live in the wild? No, dogs are not predators, therefore, a "prey model" diet is NOT "species-appropriate". They will come to terms only when one of their dogs is injured or killed by this irresponsible, dangerous diet. Dogs are NOT carnivores!!! My dogs are healthier than every other dog I have met, and they eat a home-cooked diet of cooked chicken and veggies. And guess what? My dogs get regular vaccinations, too!! Shocker, I know!! Usually those who fed raw diet are also against Vaccines, parasite treatment such as Advantix, any form of anesthesia, and seeking/taking the vet's advice for any reason. I guess all those years in vet school were for nothing then. I think if raw feeders truly believe in "species-appropriate", then they would never seek veterinary care, never buy a "dog bed", never take the dog in the car, let the dog mate every season, and quit treating the dog like a pet, but as the wild animal they believe it to be by feeding it a solely wild-animal diet.

I home cook for my dog. Ground beef a bit of pasta and veggies. For treats he gets fruit. I also get multi vitamins from the vet to make sure he gets a balanced diet. I would never feed raw. Yuk. No way would I let a dog that eats raw food lick or kiss me.
Any way, if you are getting a puppy, you should talk to your vet. She may need to be on a commercial food until gets a bit older.

Kangaroo mince is good it's lean (not fatty) gratted carrot, granny apple, rice (boiled), egg mashed chicken breast, chicken necks, chicken thighs skin removed of course (too fatty) diced beef heart also dry food Goodo's and such all available from Coles or woolies.
Check with breeder as to how much to start and how often. Also make sure parents are free of hip displacia as labs are prone to it and its expensive to fix.

There's no such thing as 'human food'. Just good quality and pet quality. I guess that answers part of your question. I wouldn't feed my dogs anything I wouldn't eat myself.
Look on the Wysong website for what to feed, and recipes. It is extremely helpful.

feed your pet with puppy food until it gets older then you can add some people food to it diet. l do not think a dog should eat just people food , cooked or raw. And as it gets older you can give it a small meal now and then of chicken and rice , beef and rice, even a little pasta. but never no raw meats because an example is : if you fed it raw chicken then it may turn to be a chicken killer. raw is an invitation to have this desire for blood.
