Is time running out for GMT?

MPs will tomorrow debate scrapping Greenwich Mean Time and aligning British clocks with mainland Europe.

Why??? Does a one hour difference really make a massive change for 6 months of the year?

It's the things like GMT that give us that slight edge. The fact that in some way we could be classified as the centre of the earth, there are countries ahead of us in time (+GMT) and some behind (-GMT). It's a shame that these things we are losing because of pathetic people in positions they deserve not to be in!

Update:

As for AZ Imagined. It's not just about scrapping the time, it's about taking away the small things that make us unique. I'm sick and tired of this!

Scrapping GMT would be a little silly.

It really helped London become the Financial Superpower that it is today, because of it's strategic place between other international time zones.

And our, financial "knowledge" industries are actually keeping us rich, as manufacturing takes off in other countries, so we need every time advantage we can get.

It would also mean that the timeline at Greenwich would stop being such a hot tourist destination, which would be a real shame because it's such a good place to visit.

OH I hope not. GMT has been accepted around the world since the mid 19th century. Why change to suit the EU beurocrats. Why must we change something that works?

Anyway using GMT helps differenciate time zones. For every 15 deg of latitude? or is that Longtitude? you know west & east you either add or subtract 1 hour so 360 deg around the world represents 24 hours.

If we fall in line with Europe you surely loose an hour?? if you see what I mean. Is this a new form of Political Correctness??

So I say a big NO to removing GMT. Keep GMT British...like fish and chips, Pizza, Curry and rice and Chili Concarne!!!

Lunacy. I like the idea of not changing the clocks every 6 months but to leave them wrong at BST is madness.

The time is alingned with a particular longitude to standardise as far a possible the sunrise and sunset. For the UK to get up and get to bed an hour before the rest of Europe by getting up in the UK at sunrise in Italy is just plain stupid.

It also would throw us out of step with all other countries in our longitude, so they would be on Greenwich Mean Time but Greenwich would not be.

What idiots come up with these ideas?

Well, i play Final Fantasy XI. Theres normally a lot of people online during the normal GMT hours. I live in the UK and i love this game. Its cheap subscriction fee's which are paid monthly. i think its under £5 a month. It depends on how many characters you have. If you like the final fantasy games you will LOVE this game.

To stop GMT would be a bad Idea because I feel it would be unsafe for children walking home from school. If you think about it 4pm is about the time it starts getting dark at the moment and if GMT is cancelled 4pm Will be 3pm and all school children will be walking home in the dark. I don't know about you but I had to cross a few roads walking home from school!

the entire world would have to agree ( the time zones are based on it ) but if England wants to play the we are part of Europe game what difference would it REALLY make

but then again you may want to consider that I'm an American and could care less about the overseas games ( since 1776 )

I live in Spain and we are ahead one hour in time from the U.K. I just love the extended light nights here. In the middle of winter it doesn't get dark until 5.30 ish. It makes the day seem extra longer. If I lived in the U.K. I would prefer the extra hour of daylight at the end of the day.

Why not The Labour government have bowed down to the Germans and French over Europe for 10 years. They have given Britain away piece by piece so why not this.

I'm sure they tried this back in the eighties and failed. Farmers were in uproar. There is obviously not a lot of work on at the moment for them to recycle this age old debate.
