What did your doctor tell you about drinking Diet pop while pregnant?

I just had my first appt - and the midwife told me that it was fine to drink pop (even diet pop) in moderation during pregnancy... I am pretty well addicted to diet pepsi - but stopped drinking it the second I found out I was pregnant... but have started again since the midwife said it was ok. I only plan to drink 1-3 cans per week.

What did your doctor/midwife tell you about diet sodas?

My doc told me a can a day won't do anything. I feel for you, I'm a Diet Coke addict. Sometimes, I drank more than that while I was pregnant, but I kept it pretty close to one can a day (this was a huge cut-back for me). My daughter was a healthy 8 lb 9 oz and born right on time, so the little extra didn't hurt, and she's not hyper or anything like that either. My tip for cutting back at first was to reward myself with a diet coke at the end of the day only if I had drank at least my 8 glasses of water. I also got as much sleep as possible to avoid the need for caffeine to get going in the morning and to stay alert throughout the day. My doc said a cup or two of coffee won't hurt either, just don't drink a pot by yourself. Good luck!!!!!

My doctor said that diet pop was perfectly fine. In fact, he preferred I drink that over regular pop (we're concerned about gestational diabetes - my mom got it...). Anyway, he said not to have too much caffeine since it hasn't thoroughly been tested yet (what pregnant woman do you know that wants to have medical reserach done on her forming baby?) So in a word...moderation. 1-3 cans per week is perfectly fine. I myself have one can of diet coke a day.

When you consider drinking anything with caffeine, you should limit yourself to one or two servings a day. The more caffeine in your system, the more harm you could be doing to the baby. Also be careful about how much diet soda you drink. The doctors recommend no more than two servings a day of Nutrasweet.

Avoid alcohol as much as possible.

My doctor told me no caffeine and no

Aspartame. So I drink Diet 7UP. It is made with Splenda which is supposed to be safe during pregnancy. The only thing bad about Diet 7UP (and any other soda) is that it's high in sodium which can cause swelling (I still drink them though). Just look for any caffeine free sodas made with Splenda and everything should be fine. Best Wishes!

I asked my doctor the same question. She said that it's ok to drink diet pop, but to try to drink more water than anything. She said that there is no hard evidence that diet pop is harmful. I've switched to regular coke instead of diet coke....but now I'm opting for the caffeine free version! Congrats!

My Ob just said an abundance of Caffiene of course isnt that great and since the sugar isnt "real" there are no real proven good or even bad things about it however.....My name is Stephanie and I too am addicted to Diet Pepsi!" I feel your pain and am due in May. My doc says to help with your craving treat yourself but dont overdo it and to balance the beverage with water instead of Pepsi if you feel you may overdose. Good Luck and Congrats!!!

Splenda and aspartame cause the gut to retain water. Drinks that contain it can cause loose bowels. But at the amount you are drinking I doubt this would happen. You would have already experienced the phenomenon. However, something to keep in mind for baby if you breastfeed.

1-3 then you should be OK. I drank about the same--1 to 3 a week-Diet Coke-- and mine are OK. Don't over do it though.

Diet soda is fine, but just make sure it's Caffeine Free.

Aspartame is bad for baby and mommy. In large quantities anyway. I wouldn't drink it myself because I didn't like the risks, but everyone is different. If our midwife says it's OK, then it's OK. She'll be monitoring you throughout your pregnancy and will advise you if there are any issues.
