If I am correct, this is the inline 6 cylinder engine with the double overhead cam (5M-GE specific engine). You can install a turbo unit on this type of engine, I have noticed some on E-bay. You have to be very careful of the type of turbo unit you install as these engines will need a better means of heat dissipation, better exhaust (exhaust manifold) and possible engine coolant modifications. The 5M-GE engines will not tolerate excessive heat build up outside it's running perameters very long. I had a couple of Toyota Cressida cars that share the same drivetrain as the supra. One of my friend's had a 87 Cressida that he droped a turbo unit in and after 62,000 kms it was still running strong- but he maintained the engine very well. If you go through with installing a turbo, be prepared to do modifications and perform frequent preventative maintenance.

i WOULD NOT RECOMMEND MAKING THE 7M SERIES INTO A TWIN TURBO. IF YOU WANT A TWIN TURBO ENGINE DROP THE 7M SERIES AND SWAP IN THE 1JZGTE ENGINE FROM JAPAN. THATS A 2.5 LITER TWIN TURBO. ITS BASICALLY THE LITTLE BROTHER TO THE 2JZGTE. IF YOU DO SWAP HOWEVER YOU MAY NEED TO SWAP YOUR TRANSMISSION DEPENDING IF YOU HAVE THE 7MGE OR THE 7MGTE ENGINE IF YOU ALREADY HAVE THE TURBO ENGINE NO NEED TO WORRY. I HAVE AN 87 AS WELL AND HE ONLY OTHER MODIFICATION YOU NEED IS THE FRONT CROSSMEMBER FROM A 91 OR 92 SUPRA.

You probably can but you need to find a source for the turbos. Check on-line. Remember you will need to burn premium fuel and your engine may not last more than 50,000 miles if you race it a lot. also go to a,local speed shop and ask the techs. there.

  • I personally would not, I do not trust the bearings moving at 30,000 rpm in the exhaust.

But it is probably possible, you need to go to a private shop and see if they can do it, it will involve modification of the exhaust
