Scar tissue that forms along the incision is usually drier and much less flexible than normal skin. When the incision spans a joint, it pulls and stretches the normal tissues surrounding it when you flex the limb. The stretching stimulates the nerves in the surrounding skin, causing itching until the stretched skin returns to normal. If your skin is dry, it takes a while before the nerves settle down. You can reduce the itching by using a moisturizer around the incision, and an ointment with cortisone might also help.
