Since you got your puppy at a pet store, he came from a commercial breeder or a puppy broker. I can say this with certainty because no responsible breeder just lets their puppies go without knowing who they are going to. A good breeder wants to know that their pups are going to good homes, and is willing to take puppies back if the new owner is unable to keep them, to prevent them from winding up in a shelter.
Papers, even AKC papers, do not necessarily indicate quality. In your case I would say definately do not breed. Puppies that come from mills/commercial breeders are not bred for quality. At a typical puppy mill, females are bred every heat cycle to maximize profits. No attention is payed to the health of the breeding dogs - in fact sometimes they use deformed dogs as breeding dogs as they would not be able to be sold in stores. It is all about money to them. The more puppies people buy from pet stores (regardless of the reason), the more puppymills prosper. So please, adopt the next dog you get or buy them from a good breeder.
All that aside, I'm sure your puppy is adorable. You might experience some problems with housetraining (Chihuahuas tend to be hard to housetrain). Make sure you keep mealtimes consistent and take him out regularly, so he has a lot of chances to go where he is supposed to. Good luck!
Edit: Try not to let nemesis get to you; he is just being rude. Yes, you should have done your homework before buying a puppy but what's done is done and your puppy is definately not a POS, just because he's not breeding quality doesn't mean he's not a wonderful pet. <3

You should not breed your pet store puppy. It's sad but 99% of pet store dogs come from puppy mills. They have congenital defects and even if sold as pure-breed are often mixed. They can also be the offspring of inbreeding like a Mommy doggie having puppies with one of her puppies from a previous litter. In addition breeding dogs is hard work and requires alot. A dog should never NEVER NEVER be bred until its over 2 years of age. It should not be bred without a 4 generation pedigree. To breed a registrable dog you would have to show and place your CHI with in the top 25 of breed. And before you could register your puppy you would have to get genetic testing, which prolly would not turn out so good seeing as it was a pet store dog. If you read your contract you signed when you got your pet you will see that your pet was most likely sold as a companion quality, which means it was meant to be yours and for you to love but is not show quality or breeding quality. If you really want to get into breeding you should go to some dog shows and talk to those people who show chi's. I say love your baby, don't worry about breeding her, just love and enjoy her. And remember that 30% of all dogs euthanized in shelters are pure breeds...spay or neuter your puppies!

You can register him with other registries, but they are not very reputable. Since he came from a pet store, he probably came from a puppymill or non-reputable breeder. I would not breed him due to the fact that the breeders often do not do appropriate health testing. I am sure that you Chi is very handsome and that you love him very much, but he probably is not quality enough to breed. I would have him neutered before he turns 8 months old. He will be a much better pet, and retain more of his puppy looks and attitude. Plus, he will be healthier and happier in the long run.

No you cannot, the AKC does not recognize this club.
"Some examples of other registries that are not accepted by the AKC are:
America’s Pet Registry (APRI)
Continental Kennel Club (CKC)
Canine Kennel Club (CKC)
United All Breed Registry
United Kennel Club (except Coonhounds)
North American Purebred Dog Registry
The AKC and these registries do not follow the same standards and guidelines. Your dog or its subsequent offspring cannot be registered with the American Kennel Club."

the American Pet Registry is mostly a registry used by bulk breeders. I am sorry, but unless his parents were both registered through AKC and the breeder has given you a signed AKC application, there is no way to resister him through AKC .
However, as long as he is healthy, and loved, he won't need any other papers...He will be worth a million in your book!

Please, NEVER breed a dog you purchased from a pet store. Actually NEVER purchase a dog from a pet store. But since you have, get your dog altered. You have no idea what kind of conditions this pups parents were kept in or their heath conditions.
Pet stores purchase their animals from puppy mills and backyard breeders, pple who don't care who these animals go to. Please have him altered, you have no idea what kind of (if any) genetic problems or genetic health issues this pup might have.
