My cat is really fat, and the diet cat food is not working. Why?

I feed her the diet cat food as it instructs on the bag, and my cat is not getting any thinner. In fact I'd almost say she's getting fatter.

The cat is most likely eating too much. Also the quality of food makes a big difference. Most brands at your grocery store is LOW quality.

Keep your cat active. If you can't play with him/her maybe get another cat. They will play and chase each other for hours.

Fixed cats get fat is a TOTAL MYTH. Both my cats are fixed and neither one is fat. I measure out their food and make sure I don't over feed. They also spend many hours chasing each other up and down my stairs.

Try adding some canned food to her diet. Dry cat food is too high in carbohydrates for cats, who are carnivores by nature. So if you feed a dry food, the cat has to consume a lot of it to get the protein she needs, which means that she's also consuming a lot of unnecessary calories from the grains and carbohydrates in the dry food.

Making that one simple change helped my formerly fat cat slim down beautifully. I'd tried to put him on dry food diets many times over the years and he not only didn't lose weight on those, but he constantly pestered me for food. On the canned diet, he not only lost weight, but he was satisfied - he stopped constantly pestering me for food and digging in the cabinets.

Regular play therapy sessions should help too - every time you have a chance, play with her with a laser toy, feathers on a string, or other interactive toy that she likes, to encourage her to be active. If she doesn't already have a cat tree to climb, that can help too.

    Best wishes!

Because even though diet food has restricted calories, the carbs have been increased.

Cats are carnivores who can't handle carbs very well. They need to eat a diet appropriate for their species which means meat (protein). Think Atkins!

Switch your cat to a canned food. He can eat a can per day and lose weight without starving.

Choose any or all of the foods from the "What to feed" link - don't just buy anything from the supermarket. You want to feed a high quality food.

This is what I did. I took two kibble junkies and made them eat a good canned food (Natural Balance). Poppy used to weigh 25 pounds. I don't know what she's down to, but she has lost pretty much all she needs to. She's still huge but now it's all hair.

Just get her a fun toy. (My cat loves thin ribbon to play with.) This will get her moving. Try controlled portions. Some cats are just naturally big. It might also just be her fur. Sometimes it is so thick and long that it just makes them look fat. It all varies from cat-to-cat.

our vet put our cat on diet calorie control food, but we did not follow the instructions on the bag. we just fed him once in the morning and once at night. he has a small bowl so we filled it halfway. he lost about 7 pounds over about two months. good luck.

Are you feeding the diet food according to your pets CURRENT weight, or what your pets TARGET WEIGHT should be.

A lot of people make the mistake of feeding the incorrect amount.

What diet food are you using? A light food, R/D, M/D, etc??

It won't work if he or she is eating too much of it and not getting excercise. Play with your cat chase your cat do something to get it moving so he can get excercise

If she is spayed or fixed they get fat, but if she isn't she might be a diabetic cat

if you aren't joking about the whole thing, take her to the vet.
