Why be offended at a correct representation of Christ?

There is a recent contraversy over a chocolate sculpture of Jesus Christ. I won't post a link with a picture, but I would think that if you Google "Christ" and "Cosimo Cavallaro" then you will find it (there is an Esquire article about it).

Many Catholics are outraged at this because it portrays Christ as a man. Since he is the son of God, would that not make sense?

Besides, why would you assume that Christ was crucified with a loincloth? Seems like the Romans may view that as a waste of cloth. We make many assumptions about Jesus Christ, anywhere from him being white to him being clothed.

Naturally, the nutcases are offended at this portrayal (as they are offended at every other portrayal). What about the average believer? Offended or no?

You know I find this quite interesting. The work itself is actually really nice. I especially liked the way he sculpted the face, for once a very human Jesus.

And the fact that its made of chocolate and called "My sweet lord" I think, again interesting. I think its an interesting idea, mind you I'm an art student so my thinking about nudes and artistic "statements" is maybe different from the average person's.

My only question about it is the timing of the exhibit. Its obviously done to create a bit of a stir. Kind of cheap if you ask me.

Art of this kind is so old, meant to creat a certain amount of shock value you'd think Christians who are apt to be offended by stuff like this would get wise to it. It gets the artist and gallery a lot of free publicity. I mean the guy has done art pieces by painting a hotel room with melted cheese and draping ham all over a four poster bed. Get a grip.

If you don't like the idea just ignore it. Or better yet do or commission work that YOU like better. But do us all a favor and NOT grace the world with another pink cheeked blond Jesus.

Well, I am sure if I looked I would be offended. But, not for the reasons you give though you are funny. You decided you know Roman culture better than the Catholic faith or any other historian. Why do you assume they would leave a crucified person naked? The Romans did this to some people for sure like Vercingtorex and others that were in conflict with Rome. But, Christ was Crucified as a criminal and from what I have read Pilate was not keen on killing him to begin with. Christ MAY have been naked when they stripped him and beat him to a pulp as Pilate was trying to save Christ's life. Once the death sentence was given he was given back clothes and only his outer garments were mentioned in the "casting of lots" by the soldiers. But, this is neither here nor there.

Aside from my early youth I have never once thought of Christ as white. He was a Jew and was dark of complexion like all Israelis you might see in the middle east.

Now, why am I offended? Because they want to cast Jesus in the nude? No, but I can also say I do not approve. But, to cast the Savior out of an edible medium is sacralige now matter how you "slice" it. He is to be revered as our Savior. Praised and adored. Not to be a center piece at a show or chunks broke off to feed the masses.

If you want to consume Jesus you may do so in the symbolic form that he himself started and that is communion.

I have enough trouble eating the ears off the chocolate Easter Bunny...

I can't imagine why a Christian of any persuasion would be offended by Jesus being portrayed as a man. What??

I guess a chocolate sculpture of a naked Jesus would pose a number of potential problems in terms of sacrilege. Thus the loincloth, I suppose. The bible clearly references Him being naked; whether they meant stark naked or not I guess is subject to interpretation.

I personally do not believe Jesus was white (He was born in Palestine- hello?) But you know that old Sunday School song "Some Children See Him..." I think everyone wants to think Jesus looked like them. No real harm, I suppose. But it doesn't matter a whit to me what He looked like; I'm only concerned with what He did and Who He is.

  • That was a life size chocolate sculpture of a naked man, just hanging there, in mid air, no cross, that's not Jesus, that's someones perverse chocolate fantasy, it has nothing to do with Christianity, it would probably even make you sick if you ate it.

I am not offended and I have seen the sculpture. I think that there will be so many people that find it hard to take. However, I know that a strong Christian should be able to know how to handle it. God Bless all and have a good night.

I haven't seen the sculpture, really hadn't heard about it until just now, but I must say I find that pretty hilarious.

If you ask me, chocolate makes everything better :0)

And to the first response, I have only one thing to say:

    ROFLMAO!!!!!! :D
