  • What does Vishnu say about love/compassion?

Most people attribute Jesus with saying, "Love thy neighbor." Is there a quote similar to that from Vishnu? I'm doing this for a writing project and would like a simple quote from Vishnu, if there is such a thing.

  • Where else has the Flood in Genesis been documented?

I am a little bemused by someone's quote:

"The Flood probably DID happen, as it is recorded in the myths & ideologies of all religions & cultures."

I've seen this a lot, but no one really documents WHAT other religions and cultures support this notion of the worldwide flood.

  • What are some juicy roles in the play, To Kill a Mockingbird?

While the book and the movie for To Kill a Mockingbird are very easy to find, I’m having difficulty getting a hold of the play to read. Buying it online would take too long.

So, I’m looking for someone who has read the play to give an idea of male roles that have a lot of stage time for middle-aged men. Obviously, Atticus is the alpha role. Are there any other roles that get a lot of stage time? I know that Bob Ewell is pretty major in the movie, but how much does he do on stage?

I’m looking just for roles for middle-aged men, but I welcome all comments, since someone else may have a similar question for another actor. No sense in keeping it all to myself.

  • Which Biblical superpower would you rather have?

If you could have only one Biblical superpower, what would it be? See this article for examples:

    http://www.cracked.com/article_16429_5-superpowers...

Raising a zombie army is pretty cool, but I have to agree with summoning bears to kill snotty kids. Although, I would never actually murder the children. I wouldn't follow the Bible that closely. Maybe scare them.

  • How does one film a puppet show?

I am taking on a project of filming puppets. This is a short 3-minute scene, so I will not have an elaborate set or many puppets. I would like to have a couple of backdrops to represent the single scene, including windows and doors which will contain other puppets.

There will be speaking and singing.

I do not have access to a professional studio, but I have access to some decent video cameras.

Is it best to film everything at once? Would it be a good idea to film the soundtrack and speech first and then record the video? I'll have access to some film-editing software, so I can overlay the audio and possibly slow down the video to match the audio. I envision filming the puppets with the audio playing in the background, so the puppeteers can synchronize their movements to the audio.

This is all quite new to me, so I appreciate any advice.

  • Are you good at James Bond/spy trivia and can make up questions?

    (cross-posted to relevant topics)

I am involved with an activity that involves trivia questions. The theme is 007 (expanded to include the spy genre). I am not the greatest source of spy trivia, so I thought I would tap some knowledgeable folks on this. If you can think up some great spy trivia games, I'd love to use them. I just need a question, four answers, the correct answer in asterisks (placed first, if possible), and a number from 1 to 10 indicating how difficult you think it is. This can be related to movies, books, or current events. I'll post a few examples of the format I'd like to see:

James Bond is said to have a "license to…"

    *kill* lie seduce spy

    (1)

In the Prisoner, what is the name of the creature that recovers escapees?

    *Rover* Fido Spot Scraps

    (8)

In what year did the Watergate scandal break-in occur?

    *1972* 1970 1971 1973

    (3)

If you can help me out with this, I'd really appreciate it.

  • If you need to defend your faith, is your faith worth defending?

Should not a person's faith be strong enough that it never needs defending? Many people are under attack, and they stay strong in their lives without the need to defend their beliefs.

It seems to me that if your faith is truly strong, then you would let insults to the faith simply roll off your back.

Naturally, this does not apply to honest questions about one's faith. There is a difference between someone asking a legitimate question about the tenets of one's faith and a sneering jab at one's faith. Why do some people feel the need to focus on the latter instead of the former?

Anyone online right now who can tell me about what time they announced the

  • For current and former Catholics: Were you raised Catholic, or did you convert to Catholicism?

I am curious, as I don't hear about many Catholic converts. I'd like to run an informal poll and see how the numbers may shake out.

  • Why be offended at a correct representation of Christ?

There is a recent contraversy over a chocolate sculpture of Jesus Christ. I won't post a link with a picture, but I would think that if you Google "Christ" and "Cosimo Cavallaro" then you will find it (there is an Esquire article about it).

Many Catholics are outraged at this because it portrays Christ as a man. Since he is the son of God, would that not make sense?

Besides, why would you assume that Christ was crucified with a loincloth? Seems like the Romans may view that as a waste of cloth. We make many assumptions about Jesus Christ, anywhere from him being white to him being clothed.

Naturally, the nutcases are offended at this portrayal (as they are offended at every other portrayal). What about the average believer? Offended or no?

  • How would you make "pop-up" paper dice?

I am interested in placing two dice on a storyboard. The issue is that someone else will be transporting the storyboard and needs the dice to lay flat. I want to make them three-dimensional.

My first thought is to create two dice that pop up. I'm trying to think of clever ways to make them pop up without looking horrible.

I'm thinking of having some pretty stiff paper for the dice. Perhaps, I can insert some toothpick "splints" that allow the dice sides to fold outward but not inward. Finally, I could attach a rubber band to the inside of the die, so it pulls the sides inward (which stops as the splints dictate).

That's my initial plan, but I'm curious how others would do it. What materials would you seek out?

  • Do they even still have ashtrays in cars nowadays?

I'm starting to wonder if ashtrays can be found in cars anymore. I'm constantly seeing jerks throw cigarette butts out of windows instead of respectfully disposing of them within their own car.

Is it possible to buy a car with an ashtray?

  • Should abuse be excused?

Growing up, I was constantly reminded of how worthless I was. Nothing I did was good enough. In fact, while tests showed nothing abnormal, I was told by my father that I was born defective. Living with that over my head affected how I grew up.

Not only was I derogated while growing up, but I was put down for my actions. Yeah, I should be spanked for stealing. But for speaking out against my father. I couldn't even say that my friend's father was better, because my own father threatened to punish me for thinking that.

My father demanded unconditional love from me. He said that if I loved him, then I would not speak ill of him. He said that if I didn't love him, then he would punish me. I had to lie about loving him so I would feel safe.

Since then, I moved out. I don't consider going back to my father after all his threats. My brothers still live under his roof and don't even see how dangerous he is. They love him where I left off.

    Is such abuse acceptable?

  • What is Hell? Fire and brimstone or silently rotting in the ground?

There are two notions (at least) of Hell in the Bible. Two of them strike me as contradictory. Which version is the better one?

Some claim that the Old Testament version (Ecc. 9) is correct, as it portrays a more loving god. If you do not worship God, then you suffer no ill effects; you simply will die at the end of your life. If you do worship God, then you have everlasting life.

Some claim the New Testament version (Luke 16) is correct, as it is not fair for non-Christians to enjoy God's graces. They made their bed, so they deserve the punishment they get.

Which version would you rather believe? God's OT version or Jesus's NT version? Is there something that allows both versions to be reconciled?

  • Would you sacrifice a stranger for your religion?

Suppose you are placed in the following hypothetical situation: You are kidnapped by some evil mastermind named Mr. X. Mr. X injects you with a poison that kills you in 1 hour. Nothing can stop you from dying.

Mr. X introduces you to Louie. Louie trusts you and would follow any advice you give him. Mr. X explains that you are to tell Louie not to follow your religion. It doesn't matter what options are open to Louie; you are to tell him that your religion is false and that Louie must never pursue that faith.

If you do that, Mr. X frees Louie to continue life as usual, except that he is convinced your religion is false and will never convert to your religion. If you allow Louie one shred of belief in your religion, then Mr. X tortures Louie for 45 minutes before killing him in front of your eyes. I know it's crazy rhetoric, but try to treat this as serious. Would you dissuade Louie from following your religion?

Please state your religion along with your answer.

  • Are there stories that support the notion of Noah's Ark?

I found this quote from someone to be interesting:

"Several Flood legends from various cultures of antiquity around the world corroborate the story of Noah's Flood."

This person claims that the Great Flood is true becaue other cultures have stories that support Noah and his family escaping destruction.

First off, what stories are these? There may be stories about a flood (especially in Sumerian myth), but that's different from supporting Noah's story.

Secondly, how could other cultures support Noah's story when they are wiped out by the flood?

It sounds like someone was grasping at straws to convince people that Noah's Ark is a true story. Regardless, I'm interested in the viewpoints of others and--dare I ask--some source material to examine.
