How effective are GPS units nowadays?

How effective are GPS units for cars? (the ones that you can buy, like the TomTom, not the ones built in)

Do they make lots of mistakes?

I am using Magellan for my GPS that I put on the dashboard of my car and works great for me. It sometimes gets delayed in giving you direction due to some interference but it will give you an alternative direction if you missed the first route. You have the choice if you want the route to be "most use of freeways", "side streets", "avoid tolls" and "shortest time". I don't have any complaints for now But 99.99% it's reliable.

In the US, where the signal from a GPS satellite is very high - we're talking 95%-100% all the time in urban areas, and 75%-90% in rural areas - GPS units don't make that many mistakes.

Saying that, however, my Garmin once took me to an FBI Office in New Jersey when I asked for the Crowne Plaza Hotel in NYC.

Overall though, they're pretty good and accurate. Although, if you wait a while, the EU are launching Galileo which will be accurate to 2m anywhere on the globe - GPS is accurate to 15-20m.

I own a TomTom One, and I will highly recomend it to anyone. I have traveled most of the Midwest using TomTom and it has never failed me. From time to time it won't recognize an exact address but it still gets to the main cross roads everytime.

Pretty darn good, very accurate. I just used the GPS service on my Verizon phone and it worked great. I used it all over the country, too.

They are only as accurate as the data they are given.

In areas that are out of the way, or not traveled often, there can be issues with accuracy. But 98% of the time they are spot-on.

THE TOM-TOM I HAD BAD EXPERIENCE.

LESS THAN TWO YEARS USE, IT BECAME OUT OF ORDER.
