Why are there no miniature cats? Or are there?

There are toy or mini breeds of dogs. Are there any very small breeds of cats?

Update:

Just an FYI, I am asking this question ONLY out of curiosity. I happen to have a GIANT cat, spayed, indoor only. Looking at her got me thinking.

Dogs have been selectively bred for different traits for thousands of years. Cats have only been selectively bred for a few hundred, at most. Cats were generally wanted for mousing, and didn't need to be altered in any way to do this. There are some breeds of cats with genetic anomolies that give them short crooked legs. Others are dwaves. All are defective in some way and in my opinion, to breed animals for a genetic error is irresponsible and wrong.

What do you mean by minature? Cats normally range in size from roughly 6 lbs. to over 20 lbs. No reason you can't find one on the smallish size at any shelter. Females are usually a little smaller than males.

If you are comparing to dogs, keep in mind that dogs have the most variability in size of any single species in the world. Even with that, good dog breeders don't breed anything smaller than about 5 lbs. for a chihuahua. Teacup dogs that are smaller (3 lbs. or so) are not breed standard and are frequently sickly and frail.

The Singapura is officially the world's smallest breed of cat, though many individuals may reach the size of Burmese.

I always call my cat a dwarf cat. She and her twin brother were the runts of the litter but he died of a disease that kills only males but the females are carriers of it. (I don't know the name of it) Anyways, my full grown cat is 7lbs, eats all the time and I've had her for 5 years. Anyone who has a full grown cat and sees mine always tell me my cat is tiny. There may not be an official dwarf cat but my kitty would certainly fit the criteria if there were any. She is really a small cat.

There are also small housecats, but most of the time, they aren't healthy. I think I read somewhere that all attempts to breed a smaller housecat have resulted in fairly unhealthy cats. :( Maybe someday... :)

Until then, spay or neuter all your pets to control the unwanted pet population. Thank you! :)

There is a such thing as a dwarf cat. Their body is the same size as a regular cat, but they have extremely short legs.
