Why do we distinguish married women by saying Mrs. and a single woman by using Miss, yet men only go by Mr?
When meeting a female, by either Miss/Ms Smith or Mrs. Smith, we can infer that she is married or not. But, when we meet a man, we only know that he is a man and there is no connotation with the word Mr. So, why is that?

It has a lot to do with the social custom of the men looking for a wife. "Mrs." would tell them right off the bat that he's in the wrong place if he's looking for a woman. It also protected the woman from unwanted, or unsolicited advances.
Men were usually referred to as "master". I.E. .....and how are you today master Jones? Mr. was utilized when the young man came of age to fight, or vote.

It's a sinister device the Man is using to try to keep helpless females barefoot and pregnant. Congratulations on seeing through this evil plot!

Because men propose so it is important to present and identify the fems as married or not married to make sure a man does not approach a married woman making a scene.

I don't know for sure, but this is why many women just go by "Ms." these days. I did as well, because I felt that it was no one's business whether I was married or not.

its always been a tradition for a woman to take her husbands name (hence being ' given away' when you marry.)
its being given a family name from the bread winner ( in olden times!) so your children can carry that name on.
it goes back thousands of years and the 'mrs' shows that a woman is no longer available.

Yes, WHY is that? We can tell if someone's married just by looking at their left hands! That's why I go by Ms. — I'm not going to be defined by my marital status.

I go by Ms, and I kept my name, even though I'm married, so it doesn't need to be that way

I think it's a throwback to a more sexist time, myself. In effect, it seems to have made it so bachelors didn't have to be announced, whereas unmarried women had it announced.

If the man's face is gloomy, you can say he is married. If he is cheerful, one can judge he is unmarried.
