My 16 week old kitten has diarrhea...what next?

I got my kitten 4 weeks ago and her stool was fine but it quickly turned to a loose stool and then diarrhea. I don't remember what the breeder was feeding her but I think it was Iams. I started feeding her Royal Canin Baby Cat. Once I thought she was ok to have access to the house and the other cats, she stopped eating the Royal Canin and started eating the cat's food. I tried to keep her on the Baby Cat but she wouldn't eat it. Every morning I give the cats one can of Merrick wet food and a scoop of Wellness dry food.

I took her to the vet a week ago, when the diarrhea was at it's worst. The vet prescribed Metronidazole and said otherwise, she is perfectly healthy. She just finished taking that. It's been six days since her first dose and there has been less than 10% improvement.

I have a call in to my vet to see what's next. I know that my vets, while very good, don't know everything, so I'm looking for some advice on here as well.

Update:

She is drinking just fine and doesn't appear to be dehydrated. I've only given her water and cat food since I got her. I know it is hard on their systems to change food so often but she has been eating the cat food for two weeks so that's why I was comfortable thinking it wasn't the cat food. However, like one person pointed out, it could be like a human baby eating a steak. Not good.

I will try putting the cat food up so the kitten can't get it and put her back on the kitten food. I can't do this until later as I'm at work. I'm still waiting to hear from the vet and see that she thinks. It should be within the next four hours.

Update 2:

The vet called and Tosca is perfectly healthy in every way except the diarrhea. She gave Tosca some probiotic. If that doesn't work, I am supposed to try a dietary change. Thanks for the advice.

it may have a dietary intolerance- go to your vet and ask if it needs to be put on a select protein diet or just feed it james wellbeloved food that you can buy at the vet's.

This poor kitten has to be getting dehydrated which is a bad thing since she is so small.

It is hard on their systems when you are changing foods around on it. This could be a reason for the loose stools. Is the kitten drinking water?

If it is still having loose stools you don't want to give it any milk or I would say to give her some. She has to be losing weight.

Take her back to the same Vet or take her to another one if you are not happy this this one!! I would do something today.

Might want to keep the kitten away from the others until she is a little older.

    Good Luck

    P.S. Call the breeder.

Adult cat food is bad for kittens, do not let it continue to nip the adult's food. You wouldn't feed a human baby a steak would you? Same deal with the kitten. They have different dietary needs than adults, and good kitten food provides all the stuff they need.

Try putting the adult's food in a place that the kitten can't reach but the adults can.

Check the food you are giving the kitten each day.If you are still unsure.Take the kitten to another vet.Check at a Cat club.
