Should I put my 14 yr old cat down due to tumors?

She had large tumors 2 years ago and the vet removed them. Now she's got them again. She licks and bites them on her abdomen. They weep and smell bad. I can't afford another $800 surgery for her. Heaven forgive me if I have to put her down.

Update:

The vet says she's not in any pain. She purrs and seems quite happy. But the constant licking and the smell is getting pretty bad.

If she suffers and you can not heal her wounds, it is kind to put her out of her misury. May god be with you.

Your cats getting up there in age. Are you sure that they are tumor because they sound more like an abcess. Have the Vet look at them to make sure before you make any decisions. If they are tumors and you remove them they are more than likely going to come back again just like before. $800 is a pretty spendy vet bill and if your confident that you want to put her down it could be the best for both you and the cat. The cat is probably going nuts with those uncomfortable things on her. I don't normally agree with putting animals down unless it's absolutely necessary but she is getting old and she is going to start having more and more health problems. Good luck.

Yes, it is time to let her go. I am so sorry for you!:( It sounds as though you really love and cherish her a great deal. I am sure that she knows that. If you are unable to afford another surgery, then the kindest thing you can do is put her to sleep. No living thing should have to live in pain and misery. You have had fourteen wonderful years with each other and I am sure that you have given her a great life. This is not your fault, try not to blame yourself. Just make sure to cuddle her and tell her how much you love her when she gets the injection. I am truly sorry for both you and your kitty.:(

Yes you should, she is living a life of suffering - the pain and irritation from her tumors penetrate every thought in her mind, and the difficulty breathing and getting around she does or will experience due to metastasis in the lungs (cancer spreading to her lungs, as it usually does) will only cause her more misery. Also keep in mind that if the tumors returned after her first surgery, that another surgery will not cure her.

Please give her a painless death and a release from her worldly suffering. We should all be so lucky. <3

(Btw, tumors that are ulcerated do become abscesses, they are not mutually exclusive)

In that case, I would...if you can't afford the surgery and she's just going to suffer, I think it's the humane thing to do.

If she is in pain and is not able to live an enjoyable life as a cat then you should. You are not doing it because you are unable to pay for surgery, but because it is best for her.
