Help! My top loading washer is starting to smell really bad!?
It's only 7 years old and we really don't want to replace it. Also, there's a bad ring around where the fabric softener goes in that won't come off.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Serious answers only please.

Do you close the lid when it's not in use?? I noticed a musty smell coming from my washer so I started leaving the lid open for a day or so after I washed so the interior could dry out. I also ran an empty cycle with hot water and baking soda, and now the smell is gone

Run a wash cycle w/hot water & w/o clothing in it but instead, put some Clorox in it & let it run through a complete wash cycle. Try running some hot water over the fabric softener attachment, until it is loose enough to remove. You'll need to soak & clean it well, on a regular basis. Try putting a disinfectant cleaner on a cloth & wipe all around the inside of your washer where the cloth will fit. That will remove a lot of odor as well. Maybe you should leave your washer lid up from time to time, to let it air out.

Pour some bleach in it and let it run on the hottest setting. That will clean and disinfect it. I do this once a week. Do the same with vinegar to get the smell out.
