Problems with Drains?

Sometimes when I come home from work I notice a very pungent smell of garlic or Onions, it's not like it when I leave and can only assume it is coming from our drains. I don't use a lot of Garlic but my Neighbour uses a hell of a lot. can anyone suggest what I could do to stop this smell from penetrating my whole house. anything apart from air freshners I have them everywhere about 2 in each room, I have a real thing for bad smells.

Update:

thanks for your suggestions, I can sometimes get rid of it by just flushing the toilet, but now it's getting worse. it somehow builds up while I'm out of the house. I really don't get it.

you should not get a smell in your house from the drains. as your sinks etc... should be fitted with a trap, a trap holds a level of water to stop any smells coming back through the plughole. a toilet works the same way.

you could always put a descaling fluid into them to make double sure.

If you are in the UK, go into Wilkinsons and buy some washing soda. It is in a blue and white plastic sack and costs around 60p. Tip this into the drains reading the instructions for how much on the packet. It will clear away the cause of the smells.

Morrisons and Tesco sometimes sell it.

Air freshners are useless. Do not even buy them. I agree with answer one. Baking soda and vinegar are the only way you will get rid of it for good. Do it once a month and you will never smell it again.

keep the water drains filled with water.

water acts like a cap to keep gaseous fumes from coming back up from the drain pipes.

Bacterias build up and create methane gases.

fill any open drain with water then cut a thin piece of rubber to make a cap to fit over the hole. It will keep the water from evaporating so soon.

sprinkle about 1/4 cup of baking soda into the drain and then pour 1 cup of vinegar over it. It will foam and expand, but let it be - this removes easy clogs, grease and odor
