What Major League Baseball record is least likely to be broken?

I would venture that Cy Young's wins record will never be even approached.

Update:

To wanttorunem: The most losses in a single season the KC Royals have ever had was 106 in 2005. The Detroit Tigers lost 109 in 1996 and 119 in 2003

To all: I forgot about Complete Games. Roger Clemens is the leader on the active list but he is only 232nd on the all time list. Cy Young has 749. He was pitching most of every game, he only failed to finish 66 games. He was also pitching every other day or every third day. The American League lead last year for CG was 6 by C.C. Sabathia

Since you took Cy Young, I'll pick another.

Because of the design of today's parks, I'd venture that Sam Crawford's 309 career triples won't be beaten. Only 2 players have hit 20+ in a season over the last two decades, and the highest active player on the all-time list is Steve Finley in 90th place. Today's game also favors power over speed, even for some of the faster players, and players just don't have those deep alleys.

Carl Crawford has a chance to someday break the top 15, but I can't see anyone coming close to Sam's record. Too many factors working against them, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Great answers you have gotten so far I say. If I may use some previous answers, and some others, I'll give a rundown of a few records that I think are solid.

Records I'm almost positive that will never be broken (no particular order) -

    1. Cy Young - 511 wins (Good luck even passing Walter Johnson's 2nd place 417)

    2. Cy Young - 316 losses

    3. Cy Young - 749 complete games

    4. Walter Johnson - 110 shutouts

    5. Nolan Ryan - 7 no-hitters

    6. Nolan Ryan - 5714 strikeouts

    7. Nolan Ryan - 383 strikeouts (single season)

    8. Ed Walsh - 464 innings pitched (single season)

    9. Charles Radbourne - 59 wins (single season)

    10. Grover Alexander - 16 shutouts (single season)

    11. Rickey Henderson - 130 stolen bases (single season)

    12. Rickey Henderson - 1406 stolen bases

    13. Ty Cobb - 54 stolen bases of home plate

    14. Sam Crawford - 309 triples

    15. Sam Crawford - 51 inside the park home runs

    16. Honus Wagner - 5 inside the park grand slams

    17. Pete Rose - 4256 hits

    18. Pete Rose - 3215 singles

    19. Joe DiMaggio - 56 game hitting streak

    20. Hank Aaron - 6856 total bases

    21. Cal Ripken Jr. - 2632 consecutive games

Record of futility I'm sure no one wants to set -

    22. Anthony Young - 27 consecutive losses between wins

Source(s): There's probably lots of smaller scale records, like Fernando Tatis' 2 grand slams in 1 inning or Shawn Green's 19 total bases in a game, but I chose full season or career for more of a solid basis than 1 game.

i think if baseball continues on the road/path it is on right now you will not see many if any records broke for a very long time, these athletes wont play long enough, they make way to much money and injuries are at an all time high. but if i had to choose a couple records that wont be broken ever !!!!!!!!!!

i would agree with you about Cy Young wins record, Pete Rose hits record, Ricky Henderson steals record, and Cal Ripkens consecutive games played .

You answered your own question. Cy Young's record for complete games is completely out of reach. There isn't even an active pitcher with 749 STARTS.

I don't think any batter will be hit by a pitch more than the 51 times in a single season that Hughie Jennings was in 1896, or the 50 times that Ron Hunt was in 1971.

Wins in a Season by a pitcher MODERN DAY (since 1900)

    41 wins by a pitcher

    Worst Record Mets 1962 (42-120)

Lots of good answers already(especially Cy Young's wins), so I'll go with something different. Ty Cobb stole home 54 times in his career and 8 in one season. In today's game, you see someone steal home maybe twice or so in a season. No one will ever come close to Cobb's numbers.

Most complete games likely will never get broken due to today's managers concern with pitch count etc.

Although most will say that Ripken's consecutive game streak will never be broken (and they may be right), I think there is at least the **possibility** of it getting broken; whereas the all-time complete game record has **no possibility** whatsoever to be broken in the modern era of bullpens and pitch counts.

I would say the all-time hits record currently held by the despicable Pete Rose, at 4,256.

By the way, to the dumbass who said the 2005 Royals' 106 losses was the single season loss record, THAT record belongs to the 1962 Mets, who had 120 losses.
