Stray cat question...?

There is a family of kittens next door that I would like to keep 1 or 2 of them. how do i get them to trust me? i have started putting out bowls of milk to get them to come over, what else can i do?

Update:

Uh, next door means the house next to mine. i am so surprised so many asked that, I thought that was obvious. Anyhoo, the mother is with them, and since I'm normally a dog person and have never owned a cat, I have no idea of the age. They are still nursing.

Oh, and if they were my neighbors cat, I would have just asked my neighbor for one. DUH! :-)

Update 2:

before anyone asks :-) i know they're not my neighbors cats because he moved out months ago due to illness. no one lives there now.

    Not milk !!

What are the owners feeding them. I would suggest having fresh water and hard food out there for them all the time. That way they know its there. Canned food as a treat when you are out there so they assciate the good stuff with you.

Get humane traps from the animal shelter or humane society. The longer the cats are allowed to be feral, the less chance that you will ever be able to "tame" them. If they are still kittens, they have a chance. Catch ALL the kittens and allow the cat rescue a chance to rehabilitate the rest so that they aren't doomed to be destroyed.

If they are still nursing, trap the mother and then gather up the kittens. Have the local rescue league start rehabilitating and adopt the kittens that you want after they have weaned. If the mother hasn't been feral too long, perhaps she can also be helped. If not, many rescues will spay/neuter and then release.

"Next door" is not the term I would use when saying "stray". Are the cats owned by your neighbors? If so, you need to ask them before you try to win over their kittens. :)

Keep putting out a little bit of food and they will come around. Soon, you will be able to get close to them, and then a little after that, they will start to run to you when you get home...

Well, are they weaned? If so, you can also put out dry cat food (unless there are lots of stray cats around)...Do they belong to somebody? If so, ask them first (Sorry, I'm a captain obvious) and maybe get some tips about things they are attracted to. But, if you just keep feeding them, eventually they will wait at your door and finally you can just sort of greet them when you bring out the food, if they allow you to touch them...maybe let them in your house for a few minutes...anyways, good luck!

    Bring them tuna fish,

or put a bunch of kitty treats in a line leading up to your front door.

if you really want them to come to you try tuna no cat can resist tuna . I caught a feral kitten that way one time . They love the fishy smell . good luck .

Stop feeding milk and feed real food. They will eventually warm up to you.
