We have a stray kitten at our house(he just appeared a couple days ago.....?

I can't afford to take him to the vet, so does anyone have any advice on what I can do......he has a wound on his leg, it dosen't appear to be infected, and looks like it's trying to heal. is there anything I can put on it to keep flies away, and to help it heal? any advice would be helpful. he looks to be about 3 months old, btw. thanks!

Update:

I do intend to keep him, my kids and I fell in love with him, and I have him in a protected spot on my porch, so he's not been left to fend for himself. I just wanted everyone to know that I wasn't going to drop him someplace.

Update 2:

this is for CF... we live outside a VERY small town (about 120 people) and I basically know everyone in it. I'm asking around to see if anyone is missing a kitten, so I'm not stealing him, and if his owner shows up, we'll gladly give him back. In the meantime, we're trying to help out an animal that appears to have been dropped at our house, since our nearest neighbor is about 3 miles away, and they don't have any pets. I came here asking for help, not to be slandered or accused of neglect.

if you are taking him in the house it might be worth the money to take him to the vet for your own health... because young cats need deworming shots, a set of three, depending on where you live you can purchase this medicine in a farm store, but you have to know how to administer the shot.

but if you insist you can always clean it with soap and water or a little bit of peroxide (hard to accomplish with a cat)

then some neosporin a couple times a day but the kitty will probably lick it off so just do it as you can, unless you feel like wrapping its leg in gauze with a makeshift cast (alright only if you keep the cat inside)

Neosporin on the cut. Use a glove to smear it on. To keep the flies away, make sure the neosporin has hydrocortizone in it.once it is healed it will still look gross, but the flies won't be attracted as much. Also if it is possible, keep the kitten inside at least while the wound is healing. That will totally eliminate the need to worry about flies.

Bring him to the vet since he was a stray chances are that he does not have any of the shots that he should have. While you are there you can get the other ailments figured out as well. If you intend to keep the kitten outside flea and tick prevention would be a good idea. Frontline Plus is a great brand for cats.

You can clean the wound with soap and water and put Neosporin on it - use the original salve and put a heavy layer on the wound, because he's going to lick it off. You might want to put it on him twice a day if he'll let you. It would be best if you could make a place for him inside where he isn't subjected to being outside to fend for himself.

When you can afford it (before he's 6 months old though) please have him neutered. Call your local Humane Society or ASPCA to see if they have a low-cost spay/neuter program.

    Good luck! :)

Check with your vet or in your local paper and contact a humane society. At a younger age the cat can be cared for and adopted out into a great home. The humane societies are wonderful. They spay/neuter and give all the shots needed and find them loving families. What a fantastic organization it is and the cat will be in good hands.

I would leave it alone for a few days...it will probably heal up quick, because he will keep it clean. But if you aren't sure then I would put some bedadyne on it. then wrap some coban wrap around his leg. Coban is the stretchy stuff that sticks to itself, but won't stick to him.

If you aren't comfortable with the bedadyne maybe just try the coban.

If you aren't sure you might check the local store and see if there is possibly some bug spray you could put on him. Just watch the age restrictions.

clean it with peroxide or soap & water, put neosporin on it, and bandage it, gauze against the wound & that stretchy sticky-but-nonadhesive tape on top, make sure you wrap beyond the gauze. the bandage won't need to be changed more than once a day, and probably won't be needed after a week or maybe even less.

Source(s): my kitty used to mutilate his own tail so i had to bandage it up a lot & that's exactly how i did it.

legally he is not your kitten so you MUSt take him to the vet (they wil charge the local SPCA or check to see if he was reported missing and charge the rightful owner).

if you ever find a kitten you cannot simply keep it - its not yours - you can be charged with theft - you MUST report finding him to the local SPCA or whatever shelter is in your area (your vet will know).

IF nobody claims him and you want to keep you you can - however if you cannot afford basic vet care you simply cannot afford to have a pet at all.

IF the kitten has infection and you DONT take him to the vet you could also be charged with NEGLECT.

a minimum of your kitten died interior the palms of somebody who meant her properly. There are countless different a lot extra inhumane approaches that she could have died. at times kitties in simple terms can't be saved, attempt as we could, and the only ingredient we are able to do is supply them the final they have had of their very final time. I had a cat named Obi who grow to be clinically determined with Cytaux (almost incurable tick ailment with a mortality fee of ninety 5%) each and every week once I have been given him, and he went downhill quickly because of the fact he have been a stray and grow to be no longer healthy sufficient to combat the ailment, in spite of medicine. i grow to be overwhelmed with guilt until eventually somebody informed me that Obi grow to be fortunate to have an proprietor like me retaining him on an identical time as he gave up the ghost. Kittens are comfortable, and in the event that they don't seem to be given the splendid stuff from the initiating, this is perplexing for every physique, alongside with vets, to make certain that they grow to be and stay healthy. do no longer blame your self for it, and keep in mind which you probably did what you theory grow to be top and each thing you're able to be able to desire to. no possible ever blame you for that.

Disinfect the wound with alchohol or soap and water and put a bandage on it.
