Believers: How COME Atheists have morals?
The common drinking question here is "How CAN atheists have morals."
But I sincerly want to ask the reverse question. That is, believers may not understand how atheists get their morals, but what is certian is that atheists HAVE morals.
In the US, atheists are incarcerated at rates slightly lower than their representative population. Secular nations have lower crime rates than religious nations like the US.
I point this out not to say that atheists are better than others, but they are certianly no worse.
So my question is to believers, WHY do you think atheisist have morals?

Ha ha. That was halarious. You're on to me. But to be honest, I don't pick the "worst" answer. The ones that are too ridiculous to warrent a response I just ignore. What I really try to do is pick the "best" answer that disagrees with mine.
I was going to pick Thomas' (and he knew that) but yours was too perceptive.
So, for Thomas: You're ever so good at not answering the question (are you in politics?). I asked you to tell me why atheists have morals - you just said that they did (we already knew that). Now your asking what's to keep them from just changing them. But the real point here is that they don't. It doesn't happen with them any more than it happens for believers. So why is that the case?
Of course, you know my answer - our morality evolved so that we may live in social groups where we depend on others for our survival.
Gunilla, apparently, God forgot to write that moral law into some people. You would figure an omnipotent being would get it right.

You're just gonna pick thee worst answer given and clean their clocks, and I could use the points, so hopefully this is your worst answer. Some atheists have morals, some don't. Some Christians have morals, and some don't. If an atheist has morals it is because the religious influence on our customs and law-making has seeped into his parental upbringing, school, and into his mind during growing up. Now clean my clock and give me the ten points!!
You just made me smile, grin ear to ear, so screw the 10 points!!

Because society has laws, penalties, and assessments. Trust me I've seen what happens when law and order go out the door. I'm from New Orleans. Atheists w/o the threat of punishment show their true colors. They have nothing but anger and hate in their hearts. When people were dying in the streets in New Orleans were the atheists out there trying to help? No, it was religious charities!! When people were stuck in the Superdome living in crap was it the Atheists "morality" that helped those people? No, again religious charity. Do Atheists even give to the poor? No, again religious charities.
Want another example, I once read an article about a town in America that said they were giving up religion totally. That all religions in their town would have to go. They stated that they would be an example to the world. In a 2 year period murder tripled, rape doubled, and violent crime quadrupled. Robbery and theft likewise rose to epic proportions. Yeah, they were an example to the world alright.
Most of your non-religious countries do not have large populations.

Atheists CAN be morally upright. People DO construct fine ethical systems without believing in God. Even so, I must point out, questions linger: Why should I be moral at all? Why should I do the right thing if it doesn't pay off? Why do humans have dignity and value? The God of theism offers solid moral grounding for moral obligation.
Humans instinctively know that certain objective moral values exist. For example, we know that kindness is a virtue, that torturing children is wrong, that child abuse is wrong, that people like Hitler or Manson are morally repugnant. We know these things without even having to reflect on them, or think them through.
God's character explains the objective moral values that logically precede our having a moral sense. A non-theist may believe that objective moral values exist without reference to God, but there remains an ultimate question. "What underlies these objective moral values?"
I believe it to be God.

The question shouldn't be who has morals. I agree, we all have morals. What is also undeniable is that we all fall short of even our own standard of right and wrong. We all know that in reality we aren't as good as we ought to be, but if you are an atheist, what is to stop you from just changing the standard? After all, if morals are just a product of human evolution, then they aren't really solid rules but really just behavior preferences. That doesn't mean that I am right and you are wrong, but it does mean that, if you are right, we have no business telling anybody what is definitely right or wrong. There are plenty of child molesters who don't see a thing wrong with what they do. Who are you to tell him/her any different? What standard will you appeal to?

In fact, social morals are over 90% based on secular or atheist principles. Even looking at the vaunted 10 commandments, 70% of them do not make it into law in any form. The USA was founded on atheist princples by avowed athiests (just read their writings) even though couched in the religious language expected of the day.
We should be thankful for this. We do not have to look far to see what a mess the religious make of things they touch. Their morals are based on xenophobic writings over 2000 years old - thats no basis for morality.

Of course atheists have morals because God gave them to us, to all of us. He wrote the Moral Law into our souls, so that we know what is right and wrong before He gave us our free will. This place would be too dangerous without His Moral Law.
Atheists do not believe in God, so forth they do not accept God's standard. It is pleasing to God when any of us do good, but it is not our goodness that we get saved through. Our salvation is through Jesus, and His goodness. Through His mercy and grace whan we accept Him as our Lord and Savior.

There is such thing as natural law. The morals of atheists are motivated by self-preservation and survival of the species.
Christian morality is motivated by a love for God and a desire to follow the example of Christ. Christian morals reflect the glory of God.
As far as incarceration goes...those stats are not reliable. There are many check-box Christians in the world. This means those who, when given a form to fill out, under religion will check off a Christian denomination. This hardly means they believe or live by Christian teachings. This only means that in their life they attended or were told that they were of a certain faith.

How many times has this question been asked? Like I have said every other time...Morality has nothing to do with religion, proven by the Divine Command Theory, The Divine Instruction Theory, The social contract theory...Take a philosophy class....

Because morals are to tell you what is the right thing. You shouldn't just do the right thing just because you think you will get rewarded for doing it, or punished for doing the wrong thing. You should do it because it IS the right thing. So as you can see, morals have little to do with believing in a God(s).

I don't know what you mean by "believer" - but I believe that God is Love. It's the Power of Love. And truly - most of the atheists I know - (all of them actually) - believe in Love. So - in my way of thinking - they believe in God. They just don't know it.
Most people choose to make God really complicated. No wonder the atheists shun religion.
AND - of course they are good people with morals. Atheists are loving people. We ALL are loving people at our cores. It's the God in us!!
