cat gave birth 2 days ago, more kittens still remain?
Hi. My cat gave birth to 5 kittens on Saturday (yesterday) at noon. It seemed as if there were no more kittens left. Mom and the kittens seem to be doing well.
Tonight (Sunday evening around 10:30 I was petting her belly when I noticed a hard lump. I felt her stomach and possibly felt more movement - although not kicking hard against the side, but the fluttering you can feel - almost like gas with the exception of the lump on her side.
I will call the vet in the morning of course - but don't know what to do tonight. I don't want to lose her.
Is it possible that she was impregnated twice and this is a different liter? We adopted her pregnant so we really don't know the details. We plan on getting her and the kittens spayed/neutered as soon as they are old enough and finding good homes for them - so please no comments on that. Right now my concern is the queen and whether or not this is an emergency.
Thanks for any help you can give me. Maybe this is normal, but I don't know

Just 6 months ago we had a cat that gave birth to two beautiful kittens. I thought it awful strange that she only had two and that she still looked a bit pregnant. But the mama was doing great taking care of the new babies and seemed very content. So it was to my surprise two entire days later when I went to go check on them that there was a third addition! I felt horrible that she still had one in there that long, but I really thought she was done. I just hope she wasn't in hard labor that entire time. But she's fine now and I had her fixed so that we didn't have to go through it again.

You aren't being clear enough on the details of the "lump" you feel. Where is it, how big, what exactly is the movement like>
It is possible that one kitten remains inside, possibly dead. If so it will pass on its own. It is also likely that there is issues with gas and other digestive matters due to the restricted space going back to "normal." Also, she may be "building-up waste because she doesnt leave them to go to the bathroom.
It is not possible that she has two seperate litters of kittens.
It is uncommon for there to be more than 5 kittens.
Be sure to provide her with plenty of water, food and "catmilk" at close range, since she will not leave the kittens side for the first several days. When you provide litter for the kittens after about 4 or 5 weeks, be sure to use basic clay type litter, or pine. Clumping litters can be harmful to kittens.
I dont think your cat has any emergency problem, unless there's some detail you're leaving out here. So don't worry, just watch her. It will be normal for her to get a bit run down for the first 2 or 3 weeks. Being a mother of 5 is hard work.
Don't stress her out by taking her kittens away. You can pet them, and even hold them, but as soon as they cry mommy will go crazy to get it back.

It is an emergency - take her to the vet immediately. If the kittens placenta sac breaks the kitten will die & will almost immediately begin to rot inside your mother cat, which can and will cause an infection that could result in her death.
If the kitten is going to be naturally birthed it would be in the mother's best interest to see a vet just to be safe.

Call a vet ASAP. Don't wait til morning. 216-362-6000 is an emergency vet in Brookpark, OH. You may not live near it or any emergency vet but you can try calling them to ask.
2 days later is kind of odd for a cat to have more babies. That baby could be stuck, if there is one. She needs help in case of complications.
Hopefully things go well for you!!

Being pregnant doesn’t necessarily stop the heat cycle in cats. About ten percent of cats come into heat in mid-pregnancy. These cycles are rarely fertile, but it is possible for a cat to be carrying fetuses of different ages, resulting from separate matings (often from different fathers) in different heat cycles! You may want to take your cat to a vet just to make sure they really are pregnant or that they aren't still carrying a kitten that did not go to term and for some reason was not born.

hi i really think in all honesty that you should take your cat to your vets the first thing in the morning, this could be an emergency, have the vet ex ray the cat to see how many kittens are still in there and maybe he can remove them by performing a c-section.stay by your cat in the meantime in case she goes into delayed labor.

if you really think there is still a kitten in there, I would at least call the emergency vet tonite. in all probability they won't tell you anything on the phone but worth a try

Id ring an emergency vet and ask them. It sounds like there is still a baby in there. You dont want anything to happen to her when she has little babies to look after. Hope she is fine.

Thank you for rescuing this cat.
IMHO I think she can wait until tomorrow. She is in no obvious distress, let her be.
