Do people that start to eat vegetarian gain alot of weight?
I stopped eating chicken about a year ago.. and now after watching fast food nation, am completely turned off by beef, I have attempted to eat it a few times after and feel sick to the stomach.. I am going to cut out pork aswell considering that pork is a harbouring ground for parasites, and I already proir to the beef and chicken exclusion, have tried (as best as we can this day and age) to cut out all uneccessary sugar & sodium and eat foods as unprocessed as possible.. but I am scared that when this extra meat is cut out I will start to eat more Pasta, Rice and bread as a filler.. has anyone that has gone veg gained alot of weight because of this?? I am trying to lose weight (7 kilos - 15lbs) and dont want to jepordise this completly... Thanks.. any tips to keep healthy while killing the meat cravings most appreciated also.. also what do you replace Cheese and eggs with??

i've been a vegetarian for 4 months and i've lost 10 lbs, its not that much for the given time period but its a decent weight lose. i think it just depends on how u eat ur fruits and veggies. dont eat more than u need, and to help u feel full is to eat lots of fiber.
remeber that, even tho ur a vegetarian, u can also gain weight from eating baked goods, vegan cookies, cakes, ice cream etc. u can still eat them from time to time, but everything should be in moderation.
also start ur day with a breakfast rich in fiber, (eg. mix ground flax seed in ur yogurt,[depends on ur preference, dairy or non-dairy] :)...
as for cheese and egg substitutes, theres lots out there. veggie slices can be found at meijer http://www.galaxyfoods.com/ourbrands/usa/veggie.as...
and if ur talking about replacing eggs for baked goods, applesauce is the answer, as for a thickening agent, go for cornstarch.^_^
boca, and morningstar ( http://www.seeveggiesdifferently.com/, http://www.bocaburger.com/)have meatless products, if u have rush of meat craving, hehe..not actually meat but it almost taste and feel like it but in a healthier form, low in calorie and fat, but not in sodium. they're high in sodium u know, i only eat them twice or thrice a month. our body only requires 500milligrams of sodium and the FDA only recommends 2400mg a day but i dont go over 500mg.
yes i still put salt for flavouring in my foods when i cook but most of the time i use fresh herbs, garlic and onions (more flavor).
and if u hear people talking bout vegetarians and vegans being protein defficient, pfft, *ignorant*.. i work out and lift weights everyday and i feel great. ,..hehe..i believe we get just as much protein as a meat eater does, and besides too much protein is like pouring acid rain on ur bones.
well good luck, hope i helped^_^..

you can live very healthy as a vegetarian, some vegetarians still eat cheese and dairy and eggs, and even fish. It depends how strict you want to be. You will need to find sources of protein like beans and rice, or soy to replace the things you get from meat. I would suggest buying a nutrition book. Just make sure you eat a balanced plan of vegetables and fruits, and you should take a multivitamin since you will be erasing beef and chicken and pork from your nutrition. But you will not gain weight just by giving up meat. Tofu is also a good source of protein that is vegetarian. As long as your calories eaten are less than your calories burned each week then you can control your weight and even lose weight if that is your desire. I would talk to a nutritionist or someone like myself that is a personal trainer. So you can design a good nutrition plan for yourself. You can also use whey and soy protein powder instead of meat as a source of protein. I make protein powder smoothies with frozen fruits and ice, milk and water.
I know many vegetarians that are very healthy. Some do eat cheese and eggs and fish, some dont eat any animal products at all, it is up to each individual. If you are a woman I would continue to make sure you have a good source of calcium for your bones. I would keep some dairy products in your nutrition so that your bone density does not get too weak, and to avoid osteoporosis when you get older

There is nothing about a vegetarian balanced diet that will make you gain weight.
Its all about balancing between veggies, cereals, fruit, nuts and dairy...but don't get too scientific about it, just eat what feels natural.
Veggies for 27 years, haven't eaten pasta for about 6 months so its easy to avoid if you are worried about gaining weight thru it.

It depends on what you eat. Yes, you will gain weight if you eat lots of sugar and carbs. But if you eat whole grains , friuts and veggies you won't have a problem. Rice is a good carb food. I don't gain weight when I eat it. Yep, organic brown rice. Make sure you get your vitamin B12. You get that from seaweed. Also exercise is essential. Walking, running whatever.

No,going vegan will usually have the opposite affect and you'd lose weight. But try to remember that veges are just as full of parasites and bacteria as any meat, and with meat, thorough cooking kills them. Pasta and rice will not make you gain alot of weight unless you prepare them with heavy or creamy sauces. Good Luck

congrats for being health conscious. we know nowadays there are lots of problems associated with animals, eating meat etc. i am thinking of starting to go vegetarian as well but have also heard from friends that going vegetarian and eating all those meat substitutes (made from gluten) makes you fat. maybe its true that starches, carbs make you fat?
sorry, i didnt answer your questions and hope someone out there will help us.

Your doctor will have the answer.Weight Watchers would also have the answer. Or the Seventh Day Adventist church. They know how to do it the healthy way.
I know a lot of overweight vegitarians but I see them eating a lot of cookies, and snacks.
You can become enemic very quickly..if you do not do it the right way.

I assume from your avatar that you're female? In that case, eat much soy. Soy is good protein. If you were male, you'd be sorta out of luck... eat too much soy, it floods you with estrogen, and you wouldn't be male for too much longer.
All sorts of things are made with soy, and taste pretty good. Not as good as eggs, but hey.
