What is "Black" ?

Over the last few days, I have read several so many different statements reguarding black americans, and africans. People seem mighty concerned about whether or not Egyptians, Somalians and other African cultures are considered "black". What I want to know is if being "black" has nothing to do with the color of your skin, then what defines someone as "black" ?

Actually, being "black" has to do with pigmentation of the skin just like we say "white" ,"yellow", and "red"

But , if it has nothing to do with skin color considering the range of pigments found on people identified as black.

It has to deal with Africa.

Afrodescendents, come in many shades of brown from the farthest mocha to the deepest choco.

If you are descended from africa you are black. Now, understand this, not all african americans are black. By strict definition, a white from africa is also an african american. Which is why many prefer to say Black american or brown american to differentiate between from africa and white or from africa and black

PureGold nailed it. I guess that's why she has all those points!

But it is true that we were called Colored, then *****, then Black, now African-American. Just like orientals are now known as asians. Obviously, no person actually has "black" skin. Personally, i would be prefer be called Black than Colored, but my aunt who grew up in the south in the 1930s, prefers the term Colored to Black, so i guess it depends on the person.

"Black" is term that people usually use to note the color of a person's skin. It is simply that, the color of your skin. Culture shapes your lifestyle, beliefs, and attitudes. One's culture is what shapes them internally. In my opinion, people are people no matter what color our skin is. We all have the same physical features (eyes, nose, ears, etc.) and we were all created by God.

To all the idiots that don't know how to be respectful of this or any other question, get a life and learn how to form positive, educated statements that actually have meaning.

Just what you said...People looking at the color of the skin, not the culture or background. If they are Dark skin or black they labled black..No matter if they are cubian, Indian etc. There is no real way to define "black" in the terms of human thinking.

It is a self proclaimed culture with the illusion of something in common based loosely on a skin tone.

Both the people who consider themselves "black" and the people who consider others as "black" are participating in irrational stereotyping.

There is only one human race (fact).

There are many breeds of humans (simple observation).

There are many cultures of humans (simple observation).

Though some breeds are associated with some cultures, culture is a matter of nurture and independent of appearance (fact).

“Racism” is an arbitrary social construct which has no standards, is not scientific, and is very subjective.

Well you can be African but not black because your skin is not black. You can be Egyptian but not black.

it's not about the color of your skin or the content of your character nor about your ancestors. it's who you are. bein black does not mean you act a certain way because then ppl think that you are tryin to say you are ghetto when the word ghetto does not mean anything to black ppl and i wish they would realize that and look in the dictionary for wat it really means. any race can live in a ghetto and it doesn't mean that a ghetto is a bad place.

Black is not an accurate term. It is "supposedly" a "step up" from being called "colored". I prefer to be called African-American or African or American but def not black because whilst I am African-American, I am far from black...
