top contributer?

have seen a lot of top contributers / best answers on yahoo answers ( obviously )

I was just curious as to what is the determing factor of a yahoo asker / answerer being a top contributer or best answer, is it dependant on whose question you answered and then if they dont choose your answer then your obviously less likely to be a top contributer regardless of whether or not your answer was a good one or not ?

Maybe im missing something....

A "Top Contributor" is a member of the Yahoo Answers community who has shown that they are knowledgeable in a certain category. Each user can be a top contributor in a maximum three categories.

You earn it or lose it depending on your recent participation in a certain section. The more positively you contribute, the more chance there is that you will get an orange badge. Just like featured users or category leaders, it's another way to give credit to community members.

There is no set level of answers , points , level to meet to become a top contributor.

It is generally thought that you need at least a 10 percent best answerer rate to get one.

Lots of answers submitted in 1 or 2 categories are quality answers with a certain number of Best Answers for them.

The Yamster in Yahoo! Answers team himself explains all about it at this Link below:

The formula that yahoo use is secret. supply a lot of high quality answers , and therefore this implies it is a mixture of points , best answer percentage and level..

I don't think they ever said exactly how many best answers you need in a category to be a "top contributor." I suspect it varies from category to category depending on how popular the category is. Just pick a category that you're good in and answer A LOT of questions in that category and you, too, can be a "top contributor."

For example, the people on the Pets/Rodents "Leader Board" don't have a lot of "best answers" yet they're on the leader board. If you look at the Yahoo Products > Yahoo Answers "Leader Board" then you'll see that "top contributors" have hundreds of "best answers" in this category in order to qualify. So it's easier to get the ugly orange badge in some categories than in others.

It’s been said somewhere here on Yahoo that you need at least 10% of those answers to be “best answers.” I have a friend that's been answering questions in only one category for about 3 weeks to see if she can earn her badge but, so far, she hasn't although she has more than 10% best answers.

Most "top contributors" are on level 4 or higher. I've seen several people on level 3 with the badge and 1 person on level 2 but NOBODY on level 1 has ever made it, as far as I know, so you're not even close.

I got mine when they started the program, I had just hit level 6. However, I have to keep answering questions in my categories or I can lose the badge. I quit going to the movies as much and they took my badge away in the movie category but I recently got it back.

There is no exact formula that any user knows for sure.

    Please see http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/answers/network/c... and

http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-d8pH0dcoRKeB12yOcnU... for answers to all your burning Top Contributor questions.

Bottom line is that the TC badge isn't permanent. You have to answer questions continually in a category to have a CHANCE of keeping it or gaining one. The chance depends on other users' performances in the category as well (and whatever other factors that Yahoo has hidden up its sleeve or software). You can be TC in an obscure category that has few questions...the factors are variable, so that's why there's no exact formula known by an user for sure. Answering questions helps; earning best answers helps; being active in specific categories helps; and outperforming others helps.
