***SPOILER ALERT - IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE BOOK***

How did Neville get the fake sword to kill "the thing"?

How did Snape know where Harry was to plant the sword and send the Patronus? Does that mean he knew where he was?

    1. The sword was not "fake", it was the real Sword of Gyiffindor, which comes to true Gryffindors in need as it was enchanted to do, Goblin ideas of ownership.

    2. (See Snape's memories), the portrait of Phinnias Negellis told Snape where they were. Yes, Snape knew, but not all the time, he did in this case because PN heard Hermione say where they were.

In The Prince's Tale chapter, Snape's memory showed that Phineas told him where they were hiding having heard Hermione say "Dean's Forest". Snape can go there by apparating (though not from Hogwarts, maybe Hogsmeade), plant the Sword in the lake, freeze its surface and wait (like Ron did) for Harry to venture outside, then send that Patronus.

And for the nth time, (sorry Honey, but your the nth person to ask this question), Neville got that Sword because he was a true Gryffindor with his displayed daring and bravery. So, even if Griphook got away with it in Gringotts, any Gryffindor who needs it can pull it out of the Sorting Hat like Harry did in the Chamber of Secrets despite the Sword being securely hung at Dumbledore's Office.

Neville pulled the sword from the sorting hat, just as Harry did the Chamber of Secrets. Any true Griffyndor has this ability.

Snape knew where they were because Hermione had the picture of Phineus Negellus that she took from Grimmuld Place and the other copy was in the Headmaster's office. Once when she was pulling the picture out of her bag, she mentioned that they were in the Forest of Dean . . . Phineus relayed this info to Snape. This is one of Snape's memories that Harry sees in the Penseive.

The sword was real. If it was the fake, Neville could not destroy the snake because the real sword is impregnated with Basilisk venom, one of the few things that can get rid of Horcruxes. He was able pull it from the Sorting Hat, since he was demonstrating the true qualities of a Gryffindor.

Snape knew where to plant the sword because the portrait of Phineas heard Hermoine say that they were in the Forest of Dean when she opened her bag. (He had the two way connectoin between the portrait and Hogwats and the portait in Grimmauld place, which Hermoine put in her bag.) He alerted Snape, and Dumbledore told Snape what to do.

Hermione put the portrait, that was both in the Headmaster's office and in the Black house, in her handbag, so when she opened it up one time, the Phineas, the man inside the portrait heard Hermione mention their position to Harry, and Phineas told Snape. Snape went to the location and planted the sword of Godric Gryffindor into a pool of freezing water, as you know, and Snape's silver doe patronus led Harry and Ron to the sword.

Neville was a true Griffendor and was able to get the REAL sword - just Harry did in the Chamber of Secrets (bk 2). Snape knew where they were because of the portrait that Hermonie Had in the bag - Phinillus (spelling?) he told them about the forrest - and Dumbledore's portrait instructed Snape how to do it. Remember all of this is "recalled" in bk 7 in the chapter about "The Prince's Tale".

    1. it was the real sword and neville got it the same way harry did in chamber of secrets; by acting like a true gryffinedore

    2. snape did know where harry was(maybe by phinneas) because he had to have known because he was there when harry went to get the sword and the whole time him and ron are talking.

Voldemort placed the burning sorting hat on Nevilles head and the real sword came out of it.

Hermione had the portrait from Harry's bedroom in Grimmauld Place in her bag and reported it back to Snape who was headmaster.

The sword Neville used was the real sword, and Snape just knew where they were, he must have been watching them to see where they were going.

it wasnt a fake sword it was the real one and he got it because he was a true gryffindorr and in need of the sword to kill the snake... Just as harry recieved it in the chamber of secrets to kill the basalisc....yeah snape most likely knew he was there and planted the sword in the lake.
