There are two reasons; cats purr when they are content (happy) and also when they are communicating with each other

All I know if mine is a purring fool - you just have to look at him sideways and he starts to purr. He certainly seems happy enough.
It's comforting when you're trying to go to sleep and he's laying next to you.

purring is a sign of content with others, it is to reassure their companion.
