    Nice answer from Russel H.!

Just adding a short cognitive/behavioral perpective, recall is often a function of the level by which we initially encode and store information. The depth of processing refers to how much meaning can we associate with the new information and how extensive or elaborate are the connections to other information. For example try memorizing a wordlist of nonsensical letters versus a series of words. Or try memorizing a list of ordinary nouns with nouns that have some personal connection. It is easy to see the difference.

Short-term memory (lasting minutes) involves chemical modifications that strengthen existing connections, called synapses, between neurons, whereas long-term memory (lasting days or weeks) requires protein synthesis and the construction of new synapses. This process called memory consolidation occurs when you sleep. You can recall these memories my practicing retrieving both working memory (1-60 seconds or more), short term memory (minutes-hours) and long term memory (days-years).

Here's a website that can help improve your memory.
