Does my kitten have ear mites?

My little kitten is about 7-8 weeks old and i haven't noticed any black stuff or anything strange about his ears other then when he scratches them he meows. I've looked inside of them but i really haven't seen a thing. Is it normal or should i just take him to a vet and see if there is something else that might be causing him to meow when he scratches his ears?

Update:

Thank you for all your answers!

I'll call the vet in the morning and get him seen!

Yes, take him to a vet. You can't see all the way inside his ear canal and there might be something in there that your vet can see with an otoscope. Ear mites are certainly a possibility, but cats can also get several types of ear infections, which require different medications to treat. Your vet can make a slide out of whatever discharge might be in the ear, look at the slide under a microscope, and see what is causing the itch.

I would take him to a vet it may be an inner ear infection if there is no black stuff in the ear(there would be so much you couldn't see the ear canal if it was mites) then it is probably not mites. It sounds more like an inner ear infection or the nails are to long and he is hurting himself when he scratches.

He is old enough now for his first vet visit anyway to have a fecal checked for parasites and to get his first vaccinations. The vet will give him a check up and look for mites. Usually there is a lot of dry black discharge from the ears and they are very itchy. He could have an infection in the lower ear canals, so it's best to have them checked.

Well, bringing him to the vet can't hurt.

I'd check the area around his ear. He may have a scratch or something else on his skin.

I'd also touch his ear yourself. Does he meow when you touch it?

You can always just call and talk to your vet to see if he/ she thinks you need to bring you cat in.

Get an previous towel. Wrap the kit in it very snugly. you would be responsive to it relatively is comfortable adequate if he can't get his legs free of the towel (in simple terms be effective to no longer choke him, and get it intense adequate on his neck that he can't positioned his paws out the outlet). refer to him softly once you're doing this, it is going to disillusioned him on the initiating. fairly some love and scratching on the top helps. Now, sit down and positioned him on your lap and do the therapy. do no longer ignore once you're by using to offer him some extra desirable love in the past you place him down. Oh, it may be good to do the treatments interior the laundry room because of the fact he will shake his head like loopy once you're completed. in case you sparkling the ears, determine to pass no deeper into his ear canal than you will discover; in any different case, you are going to be able to accomplish a little harm. you do no longer want that. The ear mite medicine could be used in simple terms as quickly as an afternoon. it relatively is very poisonous, do no longer pass away it the place it could get into any nutrients or water. good luck with your kit. in case you supply him lots of lap time, you have got an extremely loving little chum (good foot warmer at evening interior the wintry climate time, too). :)

Your safest bet is taking him to the vet. It might not be anything but on the other hand it might be something searious and whatever it is your vet can fix it.Good luck. I love kittens.
