Why do people yawn at the same time?

When i yawn, i look around me and other people are yawning at the same time! Even when driving, i yawn and a car passes me, and the driver is yawning! It's like there's a a certain time every day when everyone in the world yawns. Why is it??

It's because of the empathy that makes our nervous cell react at the same time.

Have you noticed that yawning seems to be contagious? If one person yawns, this appears to cause another person to yawn. Researchers have found that 40-60% of people who see a picture of someone yawning will yawn themselves. Even reading the word YAWN can make people yawn.

Although this “contagious” yawning behavior is not understood, it has been suggested that this could be the result of an unconscious herding behavior — a subtle way to communicate group behavior, such as when a birds follow the behavior of one bird, and all rise together as a whole flock.

Maybe a yawn is a signal to the group that it’s time to go to sleep. Or if someone yawns when they’re bored, it may be a sign to change the topic of conversation.

No-one really knows why we yawn but the best of the theories seem to stem back to our stone age brethrin when there was one man in charge of the cave. He would annouce by yawning that it was time to go to sleep and the others, showing they agreed would yawn as well.

Strange, almost certainly true but still a bit weird!

Yawning ofyten happens when there is a lack of oxygen, (in stuffy places etc) so if you are lacking oxygen then so is everyone else, especially if you yawn and thus take a big gulp of their oxygen, then they will have to too.

because when someoe sees you yawning, their mind kind of tells them to yawn too. It's not as if this is all scheduled but I think it's just the way things are.

Ive heard that it is very contagious, and also I have heard that it is a change in Barometric pressure, and that it is thought to cool down our brains the natural intake of oxygen. Who knows???

  • because Yawns are contagious!
