Should I get a female or male cat?

I've had 2 male cats in the past. The last one died in March and I'm starting to think about getting a cat again, but I'm wondering if I should get a female. Actually, I'd like to get 2 cats together. So what do you think? 2 males, 2 females or one of each?

BTW I will adopt from my local shelter, what ever I get will be neutered (the shelter will do it-it's a requirement) and they will be strictly indoor.

Update:

Sorry-the first one died several years ago. I am currently without a cat.

I have 3 females and 1 male....all came from my local shelter. I don't think it matters what sex they are. My male cat is just as lovable as the females. He's the one that cleans all the others and is friendliest with cats that I foster.

Two of my female cats are lovable but not lap cats. The third is a lap cat. They all have their own personalities.

The shelter should let you take them home and see how they do. I like the idea of getting 2 of them. Littermates would be a great choice.

Why not get one of each? I have a male and a female. The male is the very loving, always wants attention and the female prefers to be alone but will come sit on my lap when she wants attention. This is usually the same basis of personality for all male/female cats. I have a maine **** cat mix that I adopted and he is the most playful energetic cat I have ever had (and I've had a lot). He acts like a little dog and loves to play fetch. He refuses to go in a carrier to go to the vet but he does he a little leash and harness. When I had a party at my house, I thought the dog would be the one I would need to shut in the bedroom but the cat was actually the one begging for food and attention! Most cats run and hide around strangers. Cats make great companions.

I have an idea: call the shelters and see if there's a pair of cats that were brought in together, then they would not have to be split up to find a new home.

My male is the sweetest cat in the world, friendly as can be, never once has he missed his box. My female I just recently put down after 15 years of "accidents" and spraying to the point where she preferred to pee in her bed and sleep there than use a freshly cleaned litterbox. Both spayed/neutered young. Personally, I prefer males.

Well it depends on the age... usually male kittens have the best temperment, however, they may spray despite nuetering. Female kittens are a little skitterish but they don't spray. Older ones may stick to their temperment, good or bad. With kittens, you can pretty much mold them to what you want them to be, temperment wise. I would get one of each! That way, you'll have a little variety and sometimes the females are really sweet. You are doing a good thing taking them out of the shelter! Shelters don't give enough attention to the animals like a real owner would!

One thing i know is that male cats are usually a whole lot more friendly than female cats. I have a girl cat...she pretty much just wants to left alone for the most part. Dont get me wrong, she's a great cat, but i suggest that if you really want a companion, go for a male. Maybe a male and a female.

It sounds like you have one male cat still if I did the math right. Male cats usually prefer other male cats and this is usually the best combo in pairs - they often become buddies and play together. Female cats can often get along - more of a peaceful coexistence thing than a buddy thing, and male/female combos seem the most problematic.

I also have a colony of sixteen cats. And my very own determination are woman cats. they seem air purifier than the adult males, yet some could be a sprint prissy the place the adult males are fairly greater amazing. purely continually submit to in suggestions each and each cat has a diverse character, so perhaps you will get a male and a woman!!! sturdy luck!!!

I would get two female kittens. They are easier to train to stay indoors and get along terrifically. We actually have 4 female cats....and 3 sheltie male pups and 1 female shetlie pup. Yes all have been neutered/spayed. They ALL get along with each other. My belief is that if you give them all LOVE they learn to love each other. :-) Patti

That's up to you. If you can afford to feed two, then get two- 1 male and 1 female. There's a series of mystery novels, in which the primary character has two cats. One is a male and the other a female.

If you want kittens then get one of each but i think you should get 2 males because if you get females it will get in heat
