Can an employer dock your pay to cover a guests' expenses?

I have a friend i went to school with who works in a hotel. They had a guest who left without paying (credit card declined) and the manager took it out of the employee's pay. Is that even legal?

of course that's not legal...if your friend is telling the truth, he/she needs to get a police report filed and an attorney to stop her employer...that would be no different than you working in a restaurant, someone gets up from the table after eating a huge dollar order and the owner of the restaurant takes the charges out of your check because you were the waiter for that table...it's not done!!! better retain a lawyer fast...

No that is not legal. It isn't the employees fault that the guy skipped.

Absolutely Not. Your friend is either lying or is in desperate need of an attorney.

I wouldn't think so- but not sure what hotel rules are for non-paying customers.

Is it in the employee contract/handbook? If not, then the employee should not be liable.

He should talk to the labor board, that does not sound right, if indeed that is the whole story.

No, it's not that employee's fault.
