The McCanns - can't they just take a lie detector test?
Surely if the right questions were asked, this would go some way to proving their innocence or otherwise.
Am I just being naive in asking this question? I'm trying to keep an open mind, right from the start I've thought she was kidnapped to order, some ultra rich family wanting a little blond girl and she was whisked away somewhere, as I suspect was the case with Ben Needham who was stolen 16 years ago from Kos. But the evidence is no longer looking good against the McCanns and it's getting more and more difficult to remain open minded.

Sorry Vegas, unfortunately lie detector tests and their results are inadmissible in court in nearly every country. It's a damn shame, too, isn't it?
Put me in a cell with those two with a syringe of sodium pentothal and I'll give you the whole truth of what happened babbled happily and giddily straight from their own mouths in 30 minutes. But unfortunately, that's neither legal nor humane... just what works.
Say: what's sodium pentothal?

Lie detector tests are not used in the UK or for that matter in Portugal. This case must be resolved by good old fashioned police work not quick fix technology solutions which give inaccurate results. Finally, everyone must remain open minded if we are to gain justice for Maddy. Speculation largely based on spurious newspaper coverage does not replace a fair court process.

There are a lot of questions that could be asked. We are all very good at acting judge and jury. How could they possibly have killed Maddy in that time, and hidden the body for 25 days? They would have been under scrutiny from both the police and press. Also, there would have been a hell of a lot more D.N.A.in the form of bodily fluids in the car had there been a body in it and not much blood (25 days after!!!!). Just remember the case of the Dingo Baby (Azaria Chamberlain) in Australia, where her mother Lindy served years in prison for the murder of her own child (almost garroting the child with a nail scissors in under 30 mins) it to be discovered years later that it was in fact Dingoes that killed the child when her wee shall was found years later in the .

They could, but a lot of attorneys advise their clients AGAINST taking the polygraph. There are several reasons you could fail a test...being guilty is certainly one reason, of course...but there are others...anxiety, nervousness, etc.
And oftentimes even if you PASS it, the police investigators don't believe it proves anything. They'll just point out that some people can lie so well, that their pulse and heartrate remain normal. So to some degree, it can HURT you in the eyes of the investigators, but it can't HELP.

You know, I never even gave that a thought! If I was in their position and wanted to at least TRY to prove my innocence, I think - no I KNOW - I'd take the test. Then again - you've got to look at it from their point of view. If they passed the test, people would be saying that the know how to circumvent these machines because they are doctors! BTW: I'm anti McC!

Lie detector tests are unfortunately not 100% correct, there is always an element of doubt, so that is why they can't use it as evidence.

Great question, although not normally accepted in a court of law.If i was innocent of such a crime i would be banging down the police station door demanding the test to get everyone off my back and also to refocus the police attention back to Madeleine.

Taking a lie detector test would not prove anything one way or another. It's not like there's a light on there that flashes green when not lying and red when lying or anything.
It's all based on interpretations of the examiner based on breathing, reactions, heart rate, etc.
It doesn't prove or disprove anything so why bother?

its a wonder 1) they havent been offered a lie detector & 2) havent offered to do lie detector test. could possible happen in time, would surely be their best option if theyve got nothing to hide, how much would it hold up in court if they passed a lie detector test ?
