Want a National Helmet Law?

I wholheartedly believe in wearing a helmet, that is not the question, but I believe there should no be a law to make you wear one. I am wondering if anyone else see it similar to me. Should there be a National Motorcycle Helmet Law, or should the states have it, or perhaps you might think no helmet should be forced on a rider's head. My opinion is "helmets good, infringing laws, bad"!

It should be a matter of choice --- minors excepted.

Personally, I always wear a helmet. But I wouldn't like it forced down my throat. After all, it's MY life. And whether or not I am wearing a helmet does not affect risks of other riders or drivers.

So --- I agree with you that "helmets are good" but "infringing laws" are bad.

I think we should have a choice, we used to in California.

On the other side of the coin, I wouldn't be writing this answer if it weren't for New Yorks helmet law. Truth is, I wouldn't wear a helmet on short rides around town, but would anyway on long ones. National law, No, leave it to the states. I should have kept the helmet that I ground into the road in NY, to show friends!

The decision to wear a helmet or not to wear a helmet should be up to each rider, not the federal government. Any laws pertaining to helmet use should be left up to the states.

Hell, the government can barely manage it's self, let alone make the ( best) decisions for me/us.

I have no gripe with helmets, but I too, believe it should be up to me to decide.

If a national helmet law were to pass, it would not be because someone in the government was concerned about our safety, but rather that a slick ,well backed group of lobbyists got to the right politicians.

you are required to wear a helmet always until you are 18 years old. then, it is not required by law but still very recommended

I think that helmets for anyone under 18 should be mandatory. But, over 18 should be your choice.

If you don't want to wear a helmet, that's fine with me. I have a problem with folks trying to convince me that wearing a helmet is somehow worse than not wearing one at all. Much less a paramedic. If I never hear that 14 MPH nonsense again it will be to soon. Would you want to get hit in the head with a 2x4 with a helmet on or off? If having a helmet on broke your neck, it's only because it deflected a blow that would have crushed your skull. Trying to convince someone not to wear a helmet seems a little idiotic to me.

I don't want any helmet laws. A national one would be unconstitutional. Those powers are reserved for the individual states.

i agree kinda with you. i dont believe in helmets. they only work if your going to bump your head, and they will not work if you get hit by a car. for one a helmet will not save your internal organs in your thoracic cavity or your abdominal cavity. second they only will withstand an impact of up to 14 miles an hour. thats what helmets are rated for. i am a paramedic who has seen many motorcycle accidents and believe me if your in an accident where you need a helmet your body doesnt do too well. i have a link here for you to read over and decide for yourself how much a helmet doesnt help you.

Here in Mass we have to wear our helmets. When we cross over to Conneticut we usually take our helmets off as they don't have a helmet law. It's probably a good thing to have a helmet law as there are so many young and inexperienced drivers. Also the people who just ride like idiots. And we probably shouldn't take our helmets off.......
