Catholics & Mezuzah...?
I was listening to Rosalind Moss on the radio the other day, and a caller called in to ask if she thought it alright to post a Mezuzah at her door. Rosalind gave the a-ok, and gave a lot of useful background information about the meaning of the Mezuzah, and the significance of it. She also brought up an instance of a parish that she had been to which had one above it's entrance. Are there any Catholics on here that have one at their door? What do you think about this?
How is it that you would add a passage from the Gospel? Then it wouldn't be a Mezuzah at all, right? From what I have read, the mezuzah is not the box, but actually the scripture that is in it. The passage from the OT is folded up in a specific way, with only certain characters showing, etc. Just wondering--have you known of someone who has had a piece of the Gospel inside theirs? Thanks for the answers so far!

I asked a Orthodox Rabbi about this, because I love the idea of the Mezuzah. He didn't like the idea and felt it was disrespectful to the Jewish faith.
He suggested if I wanted, I could do something similar, but he said he would feel better if it was something of my own construct, rather than an actual mezuzah with the specially prepared parchment in it.
He compared it to the discomfort a Catholic would have with a nonCatholic in possession of a relic. While their intention might be noblem there is always the possibility of some offense to the Catholic sensibility in the treatment of the relic.
The Jews believe these mezuzah parchments are the same as the Torah- the height of holiness.

A Mezuzah with a passage fom the gospel, rather than an old testament passage, might be more appropriate for Catholics.

I personally do NOT have one - - but - I've often thought of putting one up.
Whenever I go to visit Jewish friends - I always touch the front-door Mezuzah, and make the sign of the Cross.
I think they are cool.
