As I understand it - when Satan (Lucifer) rebelled against God, the spirits who rebelled with him became demons, those who resisted him were born into white bodies, and those who stood around and did nothing were born into black bodies. This is why blacks were not allowed to enter the Mormon preisthood (hence could not attain heaven, I believe) until the 60s, when the civil rights movement was causing people to look askance at Mormonism and they weren't getting the new converts (hence money) coming into the church. Surprise! God told one of the prophets that blacks were okay now!

Are you really asking a question or simply sharing what you think Mormons believe? First you ask "Is it true...?" and then you follow this up with an assertion that "The Mormon doctrine promotes..." as if you already know.
However, as far as I understand the scriptures, the curse of dark skin is a symbolic description of spiritual darkness. I don't think that a physical, dark pigmentation in the skin is actually implied. There are many occurrences in the scriptures (including both the Book of Mormon and the Bible) in which those who are righteous and sanctified are described as being "white" and those who are sinful and degenerate are described as "dark". Don't let these kind of metaphors get in the way of understanding the symbolism. For example, I have seen many white people appear to be "dark" in their countenance because of their chosen lifestyle and attitude toward life.
(On the other hand, I imagine that most blacks who lived in the United States up until the late 1900s would have considered their own dark skin to literally be a "curse".)

It's not scientific, it's religious.
I'm mormon and it is not old doctrine vs. new doctrine. Skin color was a mark from God. There are many, each has a story.
For those that say "this is part of old doctrine" don't understand the doctrine.

The black skin that came upon Cain and his descendants was not the curse that many biblical "scholars" believe. The skin color was to alert the followers of the Lord of whom they should bring no harm to and with whom to avoid marital relations.
The real curse that was pronounced on Cain and his descendants was not the black skin, but the priesthood of God that they were forbidden to hold until such time that God decided otherwise.
On the other hand, when God cursed the Lamanites in the Book of Mormon it was a dark skin that became the curse that symbolized their apostasy from the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

They don't believe that... it was abolished several decades ago. They take it from a certain doctrine that cursed a certain people with dark skin, and the early Mormons mistook that as actual reason for discrimination, but has since been outlawed from the church.
If you really want to look at real injustice of the past, look at the crusades and spanish inquisition (catholicism). All religions make mistakes and the LDS church is no different.

i assume the translation of "no very own assaults" could be construed to be in direction of you maximum effective, in any case curiously so from the posts previously me. i don't declare to entice close the way all of it works, i don't comprehend why some mandatory to have dazzling colours of pores and skin yet right here we are. What I do comprehend is that pores and skin coloration somewhat can tension a wedge of hatred between persons. i might evaluate that throughout the time of Gods countless know-how there's a prefer for dazzling pores and skin colours. We learn it interior the scriptures as being a curse. i might say in case you ask a black or asian character interior u . s . a . then particular it is been a curse on them interior the superb way they have been dealt with considering of it. i might say the lesson the Lord has for us to examine from it somewhat is a thank you to look in the previous the colour of a mans pores and skin into his eyes and into his soul to locate the unquestionably guy hidden below. i'm LDS and comprehend people of all colorations interior the church. i might say that there replaced into some tough hearts while the priesthood was once better to all even nevertheless it may not be the majority. Presdient youthful is in all threat misquoted with regard to the black race. The Church has continually in its historic previous stood for man or woman rights and freedom the place it somewhat is had. i used to be raised interior the western u . s . a . and fairly eradicated from the prejudices that have been prevalent and it replaced into as quickly as not hassle-free for me to receive the divisions while i ultimately moved to an significant city the place there have been issues. I grew up with teachings to appreciate others, particularly my elders. i used to examine that each and each guy has to % what he will do and each and each are valued the two interior the eyes of God. sure i used to be raised interior the church. i used to examine to love countless adult men, to not discriminate or decide by the way anybody seems yet to earnings if i might affiliate myself with them via way of ways they acted. i might say the "curse" because of the fact it were is going to be on people who're not waiting to conquer the divide and be conscious the indoors coronary heart of a man or woman.

What "doctrine" is that?
Dark skin is not the curse, it is the MARK of the curse.
- DionysusLv 51 decade ago
No that is not LDS church Doctrine -- that is a common misconception.
And speaking modernly -- the color of ones skin is of no consequence spiritually.
