Can one year olds have nightmares? How can you tell they are having nightmares?

My one year old has always been a good sleeper. The last two nights she has been waking up hysterical and not able to console herself. She usually wakes up at night but is always able to go back to sleep. Any advice...

this worked with my little brother when he was 1:(hes 4 now)

Use a soothing bedtime lotion(e.g. camomile)

Turn all lights off, but leave some light from outside the room, so open a door

Make sure there are no loud noises like TV in the background

Make sure she hasn't watched anything previously that could upset her.

1 year olds can have nightmares and it's not hard to tell when they have them. If she's constantly waking up and crying that she could be having a nightmare. Is she watching scary movies before bedtime? If this is the case then you might want to switch up her T.V schedule a little bit. Tell her that she can't watch certain things after a certain hour and maybe this may change. OR she could just be uncomfortable. Try making her sleeping area a little cozier and see if that helps

  • Certainly! My daughter had what the doctor's called Night terrors at that age. It was the most horrible thing for a parent to observe. They said that she was most likely dreaming about a monster or something and every time I tried to get next to her she freaked out even more. The Docs said she must have equated me to the monster. She was like semi awake. However, a regular dream can be identified by watching their eyelids. If you see the eyes moving underneath...chances are they are dreaming.

sounds like night terrors to me. My oldest daughter started getting them when she was about 15 months old and they last for half a yr. She would wake up screaming and crying and wide awake but I would go to pick her up and she would pull away from me crying like I was some kind of monster. They're awake but they're dreaming at the same time. Kinda like sleep walking.

My daughter has these nightmares she wakes up shaking, screaming, panicky, mumbling to herself, don't know what causes them I just hold her tight kiss her gently until she drops off back to sleep, it is a pain in the *** but you do anything for your kids. She never remembers them the following morning either, weird.

I know this sounds weird, but I vaguely remember a time when I was still in a crib. I actually think it might have been one of the first dreams I actually remember...

I was in a forest, I think being chased by someone? and I just woke up and it scared me half to death.

Now, I know I wasn't one, but I was quite young. Maybe toddlers/infants forget their dreams? But if they're one, they're not able to verbalize it, so they can't really consider any dreams "nightmares".

    Hope this helped! :)

yes they do have, and she is having 1, try to get her to tll you about the dreams. simple terms.

Get her a stuffed animal, tell her it will protect her while she sleeps. She should sleep better after that.
