You may not be able to silence it. I never thought I snored, but my girlfriend said I did, it bothered her and it was a major source of problems in our relationship.
My girlfriend, who is a lot smarter than me, bought a "white sound" machine and this has pretty much solved the problem. She is no longer bothered to any great extent by my snoring.
Snoring can be a sign of sleep apnea which can be a dangerous health risk. You should have your boyfriend see a doctor to check on this.
Sleep apnea is caused by collapsing of the bronchial tube just as the old fashioned paper straws used to collapse when you suck on them too hard. This problem can be corrected by the snorer wearing a mask connected to a machine similar to a mask worn by snorklers. But these masks can be expensive ( cost several hundred dollars )and are quite annoying and cumbersome to the wearers
As far as your problem in being annoyed by the snoring, try getting a snoring machine which is similar to a white noise device. They cost about 50 dollars. The machine can be placed anywhere in the bedroom and the snorer does not have to wear any kind of snorkler mask. That's what my smart and wise girlfriend did, and it may have saved our relationship. I was a knucklehead who did not have enough smarts to deal with the problem

Snoring is a sign of restrictive breathing. Most snorers have a condition of sleep disordered breathing or obstructive sleep apnea. This can be fatal in causing much strain on the heart. There is a unit called an apnea link monitor that you can use at home overnight to monitor for disordered breathing and most clinics offer them free of charge as a screening tool. The next step would be to have a formal sleep study in a clinic and possibly use cpap or continuous positive airway pressure which is the ONLY thing that will subside the snoring and may save his life somewhere along the way. Hope this helps.

Get him checked out for sleep apnea. If he has it, and it sounds like he does, they have a breathing machine to use, which will stop the snoring completely. I snored really loudly, and was tired all the time. I finally had a sleep study done, and was presribed a CPAP unit. (The breathing machine) It made a HUGE difference. Now I wake up refreshed, I no longer snore, and my sleep time actually decreased because I am getting a much better quality of sleep. I too use a fan for white noise. I have tinnitus (ringing in the ears) but find it goes away with the fan running. (Too many years with jet engines) (And I ALWAYS have worn hearing protection) With the breathing machine, you BOTH will be able to sleep better.

He may have what they call "Sleep Apnea" and he needs to wear a snoring machine to bed...this condition first causes a person snoring so loudly..not to breathe right and therefore not get the correct amount of oxygen..needed. Secondly, that person will not get the proper sleep level for a deeper sleep..therefore usually results in a sleepy feeling during the daytime....also, if sleep apnea is not diagnosed early enough it can cause heart problems from that decrease of oxygen over a long period of time..the heart has to compensate for the lack of it.
My man has to wear that quiet little machine at his beside..it has a hose that he wears wrapped around his nose..it forces air into his nose automatically causing him to breathe right and the snoring is gone. I CAN SLEEP NOW!
And that's why I'm still with him..see, I almost left him for that LOUD LOUD Snoring sounds...oh my ..the shutters on the windows were opening and closing..so loud.

He may do an oximeter test Yous leep with a probe on your finger its painless. Then maybe a sleep over in a lab. the treatment is he will sleep With a cpap machine that keeps air going in, You both be happy. Smother him... okay, I'm joking.
Try to have him sleep on his side... it may help. Also, your local hospital or university may have a Sleep Disorder Clinic... if they do, speak to them because they have the greatest ideas and gadgets to help.
Hope you can sort it out... nothing worse than a sleepless night.
