Is it just not accepted anymore to offer a dog to a new home for free?
In Richmond, Va
I've heard that it was unacceptable EVERYWHERE!! I would love to have a dog - but I would rather spend my money on my pet than giving it to somebody who for some unknown circumstances cannot take care of him or her!

I got my Boston Terrier (now my best friend) for free! He was living with a woman who could not care for him properly because she was never home and he was always getting loose.
He has been the greatest addition to my family and I absolutely adore him!
I do agree that people really need to take the time to find good homes for their pets that they can no longer care for but in my case it worked out just great.

When you do things like that, it's hard to find people who really will provide a good home.
My dog was pregnant when I rescued her from the shelter. I advertised at work and at our vet's office. I also said I'd be charging money to those I worked with, even though I really did give them away for free.
If people are willing to pay money, and they take their current pets to the vet, I was pretty certain my puppies would have good homes. I know where 5 of the 6 puppies are & get periodic updates on them. The 6th puppy went with someone from our vet's office, the rest went to friends and co-workers.

I got my dog as a "free to good home" and so glad I did.
I have a constant companion that really appreciates what he has. There are people that feel that shouldn't be an option but for some that is the only way to get they type of animal they want. If I hadn't taken him he would have wound up in the pound or in a lab somewhere

Unless it's from a shelter or is being rehomed, it is very hard to get a dog for free. And if you do, be cautious and make sure you get the puppy checked out because it might be free for a reason. Breeders want to make a profit from their dogs, which I suppose is understandable. I bet breeding dogs is hard work! I guess the fees are also there so that they know you can afford to give the dog a good home.

I think there should more people like you offering a good home to a dog , a owner who is selling on there dog for a genuine reason will want to view the new home.Be warned there are a lot of people who are looking to get rid of a dog they find hard work and has a lot of antisocial behaviorist will be able to help in this area.

Well I guess I didn't know it was't proper, I answered an ad in the newspaper under FOR FREE and found best little puppy who has grown into a great faithful, loving and smart dog. For her sake I'm so glad I didn't know it wasn't acceptable behavior any more,
BTW where did you hear that it was "not accepted?

It's extremely unwise. People who sell pets to labs that experiment on animals go through the "Free to good home" ads and pretend to be that "good home" and then sell the animal to a lab. That's why a small fee is a good idea.

I would think that someone would want to home the pet to a good owner - usually one that the dog or the owner already knows.

It's legal, but not smart. People snatch up free pets and sell them to laboratories for animal testing, or use them in illegal dogfighting activities. It's very dangerous to offer a pet for free to a stranger.

I know what you mean! It seems that more and more people are looking for money than a approved home for a beloved pet. I would never pay money for a mutt! I rather get one out of a shelter and pay knowing my money is going towards another animal in need. 10 years ago all you saw was free puppies and kittens. Now your required to pay for a kitten when there is so many, its ridiculous!
