Can I lose weight when on insulin?

I am a 47 year old woman with Type2 diabetes. I had heart surgery in December of 06. I am on 3 types of insulin to control my diabetes. I was diagnosed 5 years ago and have progressed to the meds (insulin) I take now.

I have gained alot of wieght since the surgery. I eat very little. I get some exercise but having neuropathy in my feet and legs makes it painful to walk etc. What can I do to lose weight and stop gaining.

I see my doctor on a regular basis. She doesn't have any other options for me. I just want to lose and keep the weight off.

Can anyone suggest something to help.

Thank you in advance.

You can lose weight. You have to count carbs and make sure that you stay on a very strict carb count. As for exercise, there are lots of things you can do. Water aerobics are great. A stationary bike is good. See a dietician who specializes in diabetes. He/she can work with you on a low carb diet and help you with the weight loss. Don't give up. That is what the other person who answered your question is doing, giving up. I am 60 years old, type 2 on insulin and I haven't given up yet!

P.S. You have to help yourself first before you can get help.

I am 63 years old and have been fighting obesity since I was a teen. I am now a Type 2 Diabetic, on three types of insulin, and weight 300 pounds. Wow, what a struggle. I have severe pain in both knees, I use orthotics in my shoes due to heel pain, and I too struggle with exercise. I am looking at bariatric surgery. In the meantime, I am working with my endocrinologist using Victoza insulin and Phentermine, both appetitie suppresents and doing chair exercises (you can find these on U-tube), water aerobics (the YMCA has these), and working with a nutritionist. I have lost about 15 pounds so far which doesn't sound like much but is better than gaining. Plus, I feel better and am encouraged to keep moving. I hope this helps you. I am rooting for you. There are many of us out there. Keep trying. Don't give up.

If your doctor can't help you get another doctor. Don't give up, see a dietitian to adjust your diet. You may eat very little but you are eating more than you need if you are gaining weight. You can burn calories and pound if you exercise your upper body. Don't give up, there is always something else you can try.

ah, hon, I sympathize with you!!

part of the problem is your neuropathy, but another part is the insulins!!! Nothing you can do about that.

I do a lot of Yoga movements! they help! Also get all the complex carbs out of your food plan. Grains, cereals, potatoes, carrots, corn, dried beans, bananas, ripe pears and peaches, all contain nearly pure sugar!!

Eat smaller meals especially before bed. Balance the amount of meds with the amount of food eaten.
