Why do diabetics (type 2) tend to need to drink a lot of liquid (water)?

Updated 4 days ago:

I have always had a need to drink a lot of water - even in my school days I remember wanting to drink water, which although I don't remember it ever being considered, I wonder whether I was diabetic, or pretty close to being that, ages before I was given that diagnosis - well into my 40s.   Perhaps not tho as we had to pass health tests to be allowed to live overseas, in a Commonwealth country.

Recently one of the meds I take had the dose increased which made me drink far more (and urinate far more).  That increased dose was reduced again by my D.team.

Diabetes that is in poor control causes thirst as a symptom.  (this is true for both type 1 and type 2.)

Next, many of the medications used to treat type 2 diabetes causes thirst as a side effect of the medication.

One way that the body tries to handle high sugar levels is to flush out that extra sugar in the urine.  Peeing more causes increased thirst because the body is trying to replace the fluids that are being used to flush out the excess sugar.

Some type 2 diabetic medications even help this process by making the kidneys more effective at flushing out the extra sugar - which is why excess thirst is a common side effect.

Dehydration is a common problem for diabetics - both because of the condition and because of how some medications work to control the condition.  Keeping sugar levels in control reduces some of the symptoms and side effects, but most diabetics will always have some issues with needing more fluids than the average person.
