What Grain of Bullet Do You Use?

What grain of bullet would you use for deer in the .243 Winchester caliber? I have heard that this cartridge is far too small for deer but the rifle that I want comes in that caliber. I have also heard that it is an exceptional cartridge for deer. Which one is true? Also, how would accuracy, velocity, and recoil suffer in a 16 1/2 inch barrel? Rifle=Ruger M77 Mkii Compact

Update:

And out of the Ruger M77 Compacts... which rifle do you think looks better and would hold up better for hunting/range use.

The .243 caliber is an excellent one for deer. It will generally kill a deer in less than 15 seconds with decent shot placement. I have taken many a deer with a .243. I use 100 grain bullets in .243 for deer. Buy the rifle. You won't regret it. It is highly accurate with little recoil and plenty of stopping power.

Just returned from taking my nephew on a deer “youth hunt”. He took a very nice whitetail with a .243. My digital range finder registered 223 yds. This was a one shot clean kill.

In my opinion the .243 is definitely adequate for hunting medium size game. And have used it numerous times. For larger game I use one of my larger calibers. However if someone is looking at just one caliber for various types of hunting in varied terrain

my opinion is a .270 is an excellent choice.

I once read an article in one of my deer hunting magazines. The article was entitled "The .243 Win., barely adequate for a half-starved deer". Whether it is true or not, it is up to the shooter. I, personally, am not a fan of using this small of gun for deer hunting, but apparently, it works for everyone else. If you have an option of getting something just a bit bigger, go for it. And, I like the first rifle listed.

M S has it right. My wife has a .243 single shot which she has taken deer with. It does the job without any problem in the 100 grain bullets. It is not her only rifle, but when she wants meat it is what she grabs.

Yep, me too. Go with a 100gr or so. I like Federal, personal preference, and they make several good selections at 96gr, 110gr, etc. The little 55gr stuff is for smaller varmits.

most use 100 grains, sierra 85 grain hollowpoints, and barnes 85 grains work great if you are selective about shot placement, ie broadside chest or neck

Your rate of twist in the barrel will dictate what will work best.
