Why do we "Bow our heads in prayer"? Where did the bowing part come from?

It is out of respect for the Lord.

The posture of bowed head and clasped hands is a posture of supplication, of asking royalty for something. This comes from the old absolute rulers of ancient times, who could kill anyone who made the wrong request at the wrong time. It was a sign of respect and inferiority on the part of the one asking.

This was adopted by people who wanted to show respect for God in prayer, though there is no hard and fast rule about it. In the Christian scriptures you will see people lying prostrate (face down) before the altar of God in the Old Testament, or standing in the Temple, or kneeling down.

God doesn't care about your bodily posture as long as you pray with a positive attitude of heart. You don't have to use fancy words, either, just talk to Him.

Humbling ourselves before the Lord works wonders ~ We have to be sincere and adoring the Lord is right all the time ~ I feel the presence of the Lord better when praying on my knees than sitting in a chair ~ I love that song "Fall on your knees" ~ ~ ~ "Come let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker; For He is our God And we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand" Psalm 95:6-7

Bowing has been a symbol of submission or reverence in just about every society for the past two thousand years or more. It doesn't really "come" from anything. It is just a long-time symbol for reverence and obedience.

Phl 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of [things] in heaven, and [things] in earth, and [things] under the earth;

done in respect to kings is shown

1Ch 21:21 And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshingfloor, and bowed himself to David with [his] face to the ground.

It's a sign of respect, kind of how the monks or Asian cultures bow as a sign of respect to leaders, or gods.

I pray whenever and wherever, in my head, or out loud while driving, or at home....sometimes I bow my head, sometimes I don't...there are no rules, just that our hearts should be devoted to HIM while praying-- the Bible says we must pray in spirit and in truth!

some people bow, close their eyes,and look up but it doesnt mean that any of them are wrong its just depends on the person and what makes them comfortable so they can focus on praying

Luke 10:27.." Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and all your mind; and 'Love your neighbor as yourself, "Honor God' first in everything.(John 6:44). "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them, up at the last day.

This is because bowing is a form of respect or submission, usually both. I could go into further detail, but it's really rather self explanatory.
