Lexmark printer scans, copies, but won't print.. why?

I have never had this much trouble with a printer and if there were a hammer nearby it would be a mess!

I installed the printer and am using the USB connection even though it is wifi capable. It will scan and send the picture to the computer, it will copy, but it will not respond to any print commands from the computer. I have reinstalled the printer, tried connecting it at different times (before startup, after startup, connecting the printer then turning it on, turning the printer on then connecting it) I downloaded new drivers, downloaded new firmware, uninstalled all of it and reinstalled it 4 times now trying wifi and usb connections, but the damn thing just won't print. help?

Lexmark's technical support is useless! The only support you can get is by internet chat. All they do is copy and paste irrelevant BS to your questions. I asked why my printer was not communicating with my computer and they gave me a paragraph about how to clean the ink cartridges.

I feel your pain brother... i think they just copy and paiste **** out of the FAQ portion of the web site. I hang out in car audio, but i do have a cert in network admin, so maybe i can help you out.

Here is what I would try.

First - Unistall all drivers and software that came with it. then unplug printer and reboot. be sure to also remove the hardware from the device manager. (right click "my computer", then go under properties, then hardware tab, then click device manager)

second - preform a windows update, if it hasn't been done in a while, many times service packs ect. include a new standard driver pack. then reboot...

third - hook up all cabling to the printer while it is turned off..be sure not to use a usb hub, but directly in the back of the PC if at all posible, those hubs are always problamatic.

then fire that bad boy up, let windows do the driver search for you. it should see the new hardware, and install the drivers, worste case it may ask "preform a windows update to find driver" go ahead and do that it will look into the windows library and find you a driver.

hopefully that will do the trick..

good luck.. and uh,,, stay away from the hammer....

Is this a Laser printer or an inkjet printer.

if it is a laser printer - may be worth installing the HP Laserjet 4 driver and testing that one. I think all the laserjet printers from lexmark are HP compatible.

If it is an inkjet printer - if you operating system is say Vista or XP then it may be worth trying an older driver - say Windows 98 or Windows 2000. I am not sure if there is an generic (basic) driver you can download just to test the system.

Check the manual to see if there is a compatible driver you can install and test - I don't know for instance if downloading an Epson FX - which is an old dot matrix printer may work. This is just to test the printer out. If this work - you may need to find a compatible Lexmark printer to the one you are using.

What errors are you getting when you do use the driver you are using and which one is it ?

Source(s): tests like this have worked - but it is printer dependent.

    Try this

This can happen to cartridges with attached print heads such as HP, Lexmark or Dell. All cartridges are weighed and tested before leaving the factory so lack of ink isn't the problem. It usually has to do with the print head of the cartridge not having any ink to feed it. This happens because cartridges are kept flat or upside down for weeks or months before being used and the ink settles away from the print head. The easiest remedy is to open the box and stand the cartridge upright for a few minutes before using. Then get a damp paper towel, fold it into quarters and sit the cartridge print head down onto it. Hold the cartridge down to the damp paper towel for three minutes. This will help pull the ink out of the print heads, priming them and getting them ready to print. Finally, install the cartridge into your printer and print a few test pages.

Hi There, If faxing is important then I would consider the Brother all in one. It has good reviews in smart Computing magazine. If the cost of ink is important then consider the Kodak line of all in ones.Kodak does not have fax though. Hp is pretty good but does not fax and ink is pretty costly. I would consider the Brother (it faxes) or the Kodak (much cheaper ink). Also i would go to the store and check them out in person. An office supply store like Office Max shold have printers you can actually try out to see how they work. Hope this helps, Al

Do you have other printer drivers installed?? Sometimes you need to remove those for a printer to work.

I'm not much of a PC person(Mac mostly) but my hubby had the same problem. I had him try it and it worked.
