Is there a difference between poratble gps nav systems and non-portable gps'?
I'm looking to possibly purchase a gps for my boyfriends car and wasn't sure if, aside from price, there is a difference between portable and non-portable ones. Also, feel free to leave any recommendations. Thanks!

Kinda depends on preference, I always preferred the portable units because they are so multi-functional. I like having a battery so that I can take it out of the car if I go camping, I also bike ride a lot and it helps a great deal in finding shortcuts. The In-Car only units do just that, only work in the car and for me thats just a pain. If he's not the outdoorsy type then save the money.

Portable means smaller and You can carry it around and Non-
portable is fix Mounted like in a car, Boat or Truck and it
stays Mounted in the Vehicles Dashboard. Portable is
Mounted on top of the Dashboard and Plugs in the Cars
Electricity. I would say a Portable is good for this Situation
and I like Garmin Products or the Tom Tom on T.V. will do
the Job Nicely. Non Portable in some Retailers will offer
Free instalation or for a small Fee. Some Cars come with
Fixed GPS already Installed in Recent Models.

I have an Acura and TomTom system. The TomTom is only about $250 & the Acura system was $2000, but see why I think the TomTom has an advantage: http://www.a2dvoices.com/realitycheck/gps/TomTomGP...
The portable units are cheaper to update and easier to customize.
