3 hour glucose tolerance test?

This is my first pregnancy, and, I don't know exactly what to expect from this procedure (other than having to fast prior to the test and such). I'm hypoglycemic already, so I'm nervous that I'll end up being like my mom was when she last took this test (she was also hypoglycemic and nearly passed out after drinking the liquid they give you). So yeah, any answers about the procedure would be useful and very much appreciated.

Also, I somehow scheduled my GTT on the same day as a concert that I'm performing in. As long as I do the test in the morning, would I be back to normal by the time the concert comes around that evening?

If you are a true hypoglycemic than you have had a 3 hour fasting glucose test before as it typically occurs in patients with diagnosed diabetes. However, hypoglycemic symptoms are common in many people and are the body's way of alerting you to a drop in blood sugar. I had Gestational Diabetes with my 4th pregnancy and have recently been diagnosed with Glucose Intolerance, a pre-diabetic condition. When you have the 3 hour glucose test, you are in a medical facility so you will be monitored closely. If you tend to have hypoglycemic symptoms, be sure to let the nurse know that when you arrive. I had hypoglycemic symptoms since I was a teenager. It is important, especially when pregnant, to keep your carbohydrate intake level consistent throughout the day. If you can reschedule your 3 hour glucose tolerance test, you may want to. It is possible you'll feel fine later in the day, but every time I have one, I feel sick to my stomach for a couple days after wards. Depending on your history and your doctor's preferences, sometimes you are given a specific meal plan to follow for a few days before a fasting glucose tolerance test. This is a concern that may be best discussed with your doctor as he/she will likely have some suggestions for you and can ease your concern over the test procedures.

I had a blood sugar level of 68 from the 1 hour test, which my doc said was pretty low blood sugar. She asked me if I felt like crap after taking the test, and I did. I had a bad headache and was very hungry. I remember thinking "gosh, is this what pregnancy is going to feel like for the whole 3rd trimester?" because I was tired for a couple of days and started having some dizzy spells...this could all be just bad timing (I was working more than usual) but I wouldn't be surprised if you felt knocked out from the test.

When you take the 3hr test that syrup they have you drink is double to potency on sugar than the drink for the 1hr test. so its alot heavier on your stomach.

If your already hypoglycemic maybe schedule it a few days before or after your concert. that way you are either done feeling yucky or wont feel yucky during your concert.

The test usually lasts about an hour and you can't eat anything before hand. So hopefully its early in the morning. The stuff you drink is sweet and if you're hungry it can make you shaky (it did for me). Tastes like flattened sunquist or that orange triamenic. But you wait an hour after drinking and they take your blood afterward.

You should be fine and you'll be perfectly alright to perform in the evening. As long as you eat afterward, you'll feel okay. And it's not that bad at all. You feel 100% better after eating.

I took the 3 hour glucose test and all they did was the same procedure are a regular glucose test just x3. you drink the drink, wait and hour and then get your blood taken. wait another hour and get your blood taken again, and then again after another hour. you only have to drink that drink once in the beginning though which is good.

  • WELL, IT'S NOT TOO BAD. YOU HAVE TO DRINK SOME REALLY SWEET STUFF. IT'S MORE LIKE DRINKING A ORANGE SODA WITH LIKE 2LBS OF SUGAR IN IT. THEN, YOU SIT IN THE OFFICE FOR 3 HOURS AND THEY TAKE YOU IN THE BACK 1 TIME EVERY HOUR AND DRAW BLOOD FOR 3 HOURS. THEN, THEY TEST IT AND THAT IS IT. THEY WILL GET BACK TO YOU. THERE IS NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT, YOU JUST HAVE TO KEEP THE NASTY STUFF DOWN. IF YOU VOMIT, THEY MAKE YOU DRINK IT AND START ALL OVER. GOOD LUCK, I HAVEN'T GOTTEN THAT FAR IN MY PREGNANCY YET.

It's not that bad. You might feel a little cruddy going into it since you haven't eaten, but the test itself won't make you feel any worse. You might get a bit of a sugar rush but that's about it.

You'll totally be back to normal very quickly after you've eaten.

you should be back to normal by the night.. you might wanna take a nap after the test to rejuvenate yourself... i took the 1 hour and failed horrible.. sugars were way outta range.. and then the 3 hour everything went fine.. i passed that one... take something with you to do.. a book it gets kinda boring just sitting there waiting which will raise your anxiety and blood pressure.. which can also make you sick ! good luck and congrats!
