Are we changing from the Land of the Free to the Land of the Safe?

I know that a lot people in society believe that more and more control is needed to assure the safety of our country and people. It also seems that more and more it is people who love control over liberty who are taking positions of power in our government.

Too much freedom is bad, but so is too much control. How can we find a balance?

Update:

Right. I don't think we're actually becoming safer. That isn't what I meant. What I see is we are being told that if we will only give the government more and more power, they will make us safer and safer and I for one am skeptical.

We are changing into the land of anything goes as long as you have enough money to pay a lawyer to defend you. Just ask O.J he'll tell you. The damage has already been done, there is nowhere to go but forward, meaning, men with the power have been moving in this direction since the beginning, and the sad part is that the American public is to gullible to see it because they are to caught up in their own agendas, by the time people unite and realize what I'm saying is true, it will be to late. In all honesty, I think it is already to late. Also, I think 9/11 is a lie that was created by Bush and company for there own greedy purposes and most people are so blood thirsty for revenge, they believed every word Bush said. Most people wouldn't know the truth if it smacked them in the face, and most who do wouldn't admit to it because the truth is to horrifying. ;-)

Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.*

And thus has it always been, throughout history. A group comes into power, ostensibly to protect the citizenry. Once that power is secured, they begin preying upon those they claim to protect, in small ways at first, whilst seeking ever more power so they may more effectively "protect" the citizenry, until they become worse than the danger they are supposedly protecting the people from.

    * This statement was used as a motto on the title page of An Historical Review of the Constitution and Government of Pennsylvania. (1759) which was attributed to Franklin in the edition of 1812, but in a letter of September 27, 1760 to David Hume, he states that he published this book and denies that he wrote it, other than a few remarks that were credited to the Pennsylvania Assembly, in which he served. The phrase itself was first used in a letter from that Assembly dated November 11, 1755 to the Governor of Pennsylvania. An article on the origins of this statement here includes a scan that indicates the original typography of the 1759 document, which uses an archaic form of "s": "Thoſe who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." Researchers now believe that a fellow diplomat by the name of Richard Jackson is the primary author of the book. With the information thus far available the issue of authorship of the statement is not yet definitely resolved, but the evidence indicates it was very likely Franklin, who in the Poor Richard's Almanac of 1738 is known to have written a similar proverb: "Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor Liberty to purchase power."

No, we are changing from Land of the Free to Land of Illegal Immigrants. Once illegals start getting into positions of power in the Federal government it is all over. Any ideas you have about controls and safety you can toss out the window.

You have to do your home work, don't just pick a political figure to vote for because he talks a good game. Do the research that will tell you what he/she stands for. Find out if he/she is in office now how they voted on things important to you. Listen to their speeches. See who they associate with, see who's backing them. Then go and vote. If they don't do what they have promised don't let them stay in office for any more than one term. Vote them out. For to long and it seems to be getting worse the voters in the US are suffering from the idea that one vote won't help. If you do what you should you'll find others that think as you do, now it's not one vote anymore. Don't like the way things are? Get off couch and do something about it, and by the way Happy Holidays

More like the land of the lost. I guess you're asking if we're being asked to trade our freedom for security, and we know what that will get us: the loss of both. Have you read "The End of America," by Naomi Wolf? It's worth a look.

I agree, and I also think we're becoming more and more isolationist. We insulate ourselves from the rest of the world because the government and media has made us afraid of anything foreign. Only 20% of americans even have passports!

First of all, who is "we"?

What happened in the US after 9/11 didn't happen everywhere.

Where I live, we still have the balance you speak of.

We are not one iota safer than we were before 9/11..........even the US government admits that.
